Off the top of my head, it's about the most pretentious name I can think of.

HillyWallaby · 02/05/2012 03:49

I generally approve of poncey and unusual names but I think this one smacks of being too deliberately poncey and try hard, and no-one will ever be able to spell it or pronounce it, which will be a right PITA for your child.

iMoniker · 02/05/2012 03:59

I reckon it's awful!

MarySA · 02/05/2012 10:26

I think it takes the prize for the most awful name yet. Even Cuthbert seems OK in comparison!

CaptainHetty · 02/05/2012 10:34

I wouldn't use it, it sounds like it should be the name of a disease or medical procedure.

squoosh · 02/05/2012 10:37

Ugh, Ptolemy. Could you get anymore Mumsnet??

I'd immediately think the parents are academics, with more erudition than sense.

minouminou · 02/05/2012 11:05

Hang on......weren't you considering Thorbjörn?
Pthorbjörn, maybe!!!!
Or not.

MrsLetch · 02/05/2012 21:51

My youngest daughter used to go to nursery with a Ptolemy. At first, I was a bit Hmm at the name, but the little boy was very cute and now I just associate the name with him. For me, the name has certainly been a grower and now, having known a cute little Ptolemy, I have to admit I quite like it.

manicinsomniac · 02/05/2012 22:04

Ugh no, awful.

I know one. Poor kid gets called 'Tolly'! Ridiculous!

Rhubarbgarden · 03/05/2012 03:30

I secretly rather like it, because of Ptolemy Dean I think. But it is poncetastic.

Chesticles · 03/05/2012 12:47

Mrs Letch my daughter goes to nursery with a Ptolemy. Maybe it's the same one. Like you I orignally thought Shock but an now used to it. There is a Percy in the same class which I am also now used to!

DD can't pronounce it though and calls him Tommy.

tunaday · 03/05/2012 16:11

I really want to like it but I don't.

There is one in DS1's class. He is generally called Tol. Really dislike it.

Givingupmyjob · 03/05/2012 18:34

Perhaps dislike of the name however is influenced by fact that child in question is very naughty. The other day I caught him and another child having a wee fight. Hmm. Not a small fight, a fight with wee

Ilovedaintynuts · 03/05/2012 18:51

MrsLetch · 03/05/2012 22:12

Not the same as ours then - we're in the Cotswolds.

Chesticles · 03/05/2012 22:39
