How would you pronounce Aine?

Love the name Aine for DD2 but really concerned about the pronunciation (and spelling) issues, ie if someone hears it will they spell it wrong, if they see it will they sat it wrong?

I have a fairly popular late 70's / early 80's name that can be spelt one of two main ways, plus had an unusally spelt and pronounced surname so I'm perhaps oversensitive to the issue as I was bullied at school for correcting my name. Perhaps DD2 would love a more unusual name and will have more confidence (here's hoping) than her shy and sensitive mother!

So, how would you pronounce Aine?

Thanks

IslaValargeone · 27/04/2012 20:09

mybootsaremuddy · 27/04/2012 20:11

The one I know is 7 and is pronounced 'Awn-ya'

AThingInYourLife · 27/04/2012 20:13

Áine Wink

I guess something close to Aw(i)n-ye

Bunbaker · 27/04/2012 20:15

I have never heard of it so I would pronounce it how it is written down - Ain. Obviously I'm wrong. Is it Irish?

BlueAndRedMakePurple · 27/04/2012 20:17

I'm same as bunbaker I would pronounce it exactly as its written.

Is it supposed ot have any accents on?

gothicmama · 27/04/2012 20:17

Onyah

AThingInYourLife · 27/04/2012 20:18

Yes, it's Irish.

It's a very, very old name :)

Catsu · 27/04/2012 20:18

On ya

AThingInYourLife · 27/04/2012 20:20

There should be a fada (acute accent) on the A, but it used to be acceptable to leave them off capital letters.

Bunbaker · 27/04/2012 20:20

If it is on-ya then I can see it being mispronounced and misspelt. I like the name, but have never come across it before. Unfortunately there is a lot of teasing potential as well.

DonInKillerHeels · 27/04/2012 20:22

Oh don't. Please. It's impossible to pronounce. I had an Aine in one of my classes and despite having been told several times I could never get it right; it was totally embarrassing.

Put it back on the shelf, for the love of god.

FuckerSnailInYourHedgerow · 27/04/2012 20:24

Awnya - the fada means the emphasis is on the A. Im Irish and never heard it pronounced any other way.

MrsJamin · 27/04/2012 20:30

Why not go for "Anne". I think it's due for a comeback.

Rubirosa · 27/04/2012 20:35

Anya is a nice, easy to spell alternative.

The one I know is On-ya.

salvadory · 27/04/2012 20:38

Awnya. It's lovely, I was at school with one in the 80's in NW uk. No one struggled with her name.

Mealiepudding · 27/04/2012 20:48

"Orn-yer"?

Surely it's On-ya?

BlackSwan · 27/04/2012 20:49

Would pronounce it to rhyme with cane. Like Ayn Rand.
