How would you pronounce Aine?

Love the name Aine for DD2 but really concerned about the pronunciation (and spelling) issues, ie if someone hears it will they spell it wrong, if they see it will they sat it wrong?

I have a fairly popular late 70's / early 80's name that can be spelt one of two main ways, plus had an unusally spelt and pronounced surname so I'm perhaps oversensitive to the issue as I was bullied at school for correcting my name. Perhaps DD2 would love a more unusual name and will have more confidence (here's hoping) than her shy and sensitive mother!

So, how would you pronounce Aine?

Thanks

I would have said Ayn too, sorry. Pretty name but she'll be forever correcting it.

HolyCameraConfusionBatman · 27/04/2012 20:57

I would have said 'Ain' or 'Ay-nee'

elgoogreven · 27/04/2012 20:58

on-ya

AThingInYourLife · 27/04/2012 21:18

:o @ Aine Rand

SilverSky · 27/04/2012 21:20

Its on-ya. FACT. I know an Aine. Grin

BBQJuly · 27/04/2012 21:26

Ay-nuh

KenDoddsDadsDog · 27/04/2012 21:28

On-ya . It was on my list for DD.

HolyCameraConfusionBatman · 27/04/2012 21:30

My ignorance, but I would have gone through 50 pronunciations before I got to 'On-ya' from 'Aine'

Superfly · 27/04/2012 22:54

Awn-ya

SLVC · 27/04/2012 23:48

Iy's supposed to be Awn-ya but obviously a lot of people hear/say On-ya.. Pretty name.

talkingnonsense · 28/04/2012 07:04

If you aren't in Ireland why not use Anya- you will get arn- ya from lots of people.

Nospringflower · 28/04/2012 07:16

I know someone who's daughter is called 'onya' and I have never seen it spelt but now think it must be Aine (her background is Irish). Reading Aine I would never guess Onya but would know it can't be pronounced as it's written so would ask. I don't think it matters and think its a nice name but yes, will always have to spell name but I have an easy name and still have to spell it and all my children's Confused

AhsokaTano · 28/04/2012 08:22

Without ever having seen it before or knowing anything of it's origins I'd be saying Ann-ya.

It looks very pretty written down though and I'm sure people will become used to it.

Badgerina · 28/04/2012 09:40

I think the question needs to be how it should be pronounced, not how people think it should sound.

It's Awnya or Onya. I know one in her late 20s. I had a double take when I first saw her name written down because I'd only heard it said at first, but you will only need to tell people once before they get it.

I like the name, it is very Irish though - are you Irish?

PJHarpy · 28/04/2012 09:42

Awnya not Onya. Nice Irish name.

FondleWithCare · 28/04/2012 09:48

I know one, she pronounces it on-ya. I like it.

DustyDen · 28/04/2012 21:51

I'd have said "Ay-nee" because I've never heard it before.

ornellaia · 28/04/2012 21:55

Awnya - it's my sister's name. She was known as 'onion' at school.

teatimesthree · 28/04/2012 21:56

I think the correct pronunciation is closer to Awn-yuh than On-ya. That is always how it was said when I was growing up in Ireland, and there is an Aine in DD's nursery who pronounces it like that.

Having said that, DD calls her 'On-ya', so I suspect that is what the nursery staff have made of it!

KenDoddsDadsDog · 28/04/2012 23:12

It sounds like Awnya when my Irish family say it. I can't quite get it like that with my accent, sounds like Onya as the Aw is much more subtle than in a word like Awning.

thunksheadontable · 28/04/2012 23:23

Munster Irish: Awng nya (with only the barest hint of that 'g' sound, sort of like the ng at the end of singing if you're down south and not from Lancashire!).

Well, not really. That's how my dad's family would say it. I am too English and would say "Awn -nya"
