Noah - for a girl

Have been looking through my Bible for some inspiration and there is a female Noah in the Old Testament. I kinda like it - any thoughts?

There was a thread about this before, I think. I was in favour. Some folk who knew the name better pointed out some assumptions or baggage that came along with it, as I remember it.

goingtoofast · 27/04/2012 13:31

I've seen i spelt Noa for a girl, I'm not keen.

BonnieBumble · 27/04/2012 13:32

It sounds like a boys name. She won't thank you for it.

tammy234 · 27/04/2012 13:32

Noa is lovely. I know a 6 year old named this and it suits her.

tammy234 · 27/04/2012 13:32

See I think any name ending in 'a' sounds rather feminine.

evamummy · 27/04/2012 13:39

Agree it sounds feminine but I'd spell it Noa - simple and feminine!

ButterPecanMuffin · 27/04/2012 13:46

I don't like it for a girl, but then it's my son's name, and my 104-year old great-grandfather's name. Nothing feminine about my great-grandfather!

Owlshaped · 27/04/2012 14:11

I agree, I know a Noa (little girl) and Noah (6yo boy) I think it works with both. If you like it, go for it. I don't think you will regret it. I'd be happy to have it as a name.

randomimposter · 27/04/2012 14:14

Noa is very pretty. And in that there a few names that are unisex, I don't see why not. Robin, Ashley, Alex etc...

I would spell without the h for a girl though.

bigbluebump · 27/04/2012 14:17

I too think that Noa/Noah sounds rather feminine, probably because or the 'a' ending sound. I think it is lovely for a girl, but I'd probably spell it Noa.

TheSurgeonsMate · 27/04/2012 14:20

I think it might be the spelling thing that I remember form the previous thread - if you call your duaghter Noah, then people might think you should have used the name Noa.

BackforGood · 27/04/2012 14:26

In GB though, it's associated with being a boys' name.
She would spend her whole life explaining that she's a girl.
She will be asked "why did your parents give you a boys' name?"

PJHarpy · 27/04/2012 15:30

Not nice, sorry.

SootySweepandSue · 27/04/2012 15:31

Nuala maybe but not Noah.

Scoobyblue · 27/04/2012 15:35

Sorry don't like it.

Floggingmolly · 27/04/2012 15:36

It is a boys name, sorry. I don't personally like it for a boy either.

ScrambledSmegs · 27/04/2012 15:43

Noa is okay, although not something I would choose. But that's because I don't like the sound of it as a name much, nothing to do with it being a 'boys' name.

Some people have gender/name issues, some don't. I know a Peta (female), a Lindsey (male), and Vivien (male). Peta in particular loves her name, and the men have never had problems that I'm aware of. They're all adults.

HolyCameraConfusionBatman · 27/04/2012 15:45

I really like the sound of it, but it's so much a boys name that she'll spend her whole life being confused as a boy/people asking her why she has a boys name etc.

lop37 · 27/04/2012 16:07

Noelia? Very nice Spanish name all get nn Noe pronounced noa.

NagooIsBuildingAnArk · 27/04/2012 16:18

There's a Nyah at DS's school.

I like Noa.

manicinsomniac · 27/04/2012 16:52

I would definitely spell it Noa for a girl. Noah might be unisex technically but in the UK it is seen as a boys' name.

Alternatives would be Nyah or Nia?

ilovesprouts · 27/04/2012 17:16

noah is a boys name

BBQJuly · 27/04/2012 17:59

It's so well known as a boys' name that I don't think using it for a girl is a good idea.

Isn't that Miley Cyrus's little sisters name?

I think its a boys name, but I guess others don't.

MrsLettuce · 27/04/2012 18:12

Noa has been in and out of the top 10 here for years. It's a name I've grown to love!
