Baby boy due soon and inspiration has yet to strike!

It's got to be relatively easy to spell/pronounce, not too "aspirational" (eg Benedict/Arlo/Caspian type things). We would like to avoid anything starting with H as we are from Yorkshire :)

Scottish/Irish names fine as long as they are not too difficult to spell (nothing with fadas!)

Ideally a "classless" name that could take you from cradle to grave...we're not asking for much eh!

Don't have a problem with long names that can be shortened or short names that can't.

Relatively popular is fine but would prefer to avoid the James/Thomas type names i.e. five in every class. We are in an area where the most popular names are heavily used.

Can anybody help!

I love it because it's ds's name, but also, it's not too common or too unusual.

Really, you find Benedict 'aspirational'?

softpaw · 24/04/2012 18:34

George...simple and strong

foxeeroxee · 24/04/2012 20:01

D1 is called harris. I know you said no 'h' names but i couldnt help suggesting it because im from yorkshire too. It sounds
quite funny when hearing his nursery friends shouting - 'ere 'arris come ova ere t'play!'

All easy to spell and pronounce and most have obvious shortening, none are "odd" nor so commonplace there are 5 in every class!

"Really, you find Benedict 'aspirational'?" - yes, for a nurse and a forklift driver and in our accent it sounds daft. The most popular names at dd's nursery are Tegan and Riley Hmm this isn't Harrogate you know!

I love Patrick, George and Mark is growing on me, I haven't met a little one! I'm also amused at how often DH and my brothers' names are coming up :)

foxeeroxee my friend is a teacher in Wakefield and has had a Hermione in her class recently - the pronunciation from the other kids is fantastic!

Will draw up a shortlist and see what the man thinks.

Nobody would bat an eyelid at Benjamin/Ben but most people I know would assume Benedict was in tribute to the current Pope.

Patrick is lovely but don't do Mark, it's my dh's name and he hates it!

helenovhull · 24/04/2012 21:15

I'll bear that in mind :) Why does he hate it? My friend's DH is Mark, I'll have to ask him how he feels about his name...my cousin's wife is Julia and has a seemingly irrational hatred of her own name, and I had a friend at school who changed her name cos she hated it so much - I found it a bit odd as her name was Marie, seems perfectly pleasant and inoffensive to me!

tralalala · 24/04/2012 21:38

He hates Mark because it is like a mark, often a negative ( a mark on a table) or a speck and therefore insignificant.

I tell him to me it's like a mark as in making ones mark but it doesn't wash! Now Julia is a beautiful name.

Fellow Yorkshirelady here Grin

Cannot say Benedict is my choice tbh - but then each to their own taste.

then again we have a Gabriel who couldn't be anything else, he would of been a Harry but he's far to cool and unique for that Wink OH's choice, which i vetoed in my first pg - although adore it now!

I am originally from Lincolnshire (literally otherside of the bridge, from where i think you are!)........but OH is Yorks through and through, we moved to a village in W Yorks, about 15 mins from Bradford last year and have come across many unusal names.....much more diverse and unusual than i'd of thought....

Anyway ha ha, my personal faves which aren't too common

Sebastien
Dominic
Saul
Jude
Jonah
Leo
Theodore (Theo)

More Usual...

Benjamin
Alexander (alex)
Jacob
Daniel
Oscar
Isaac
Tobias
Nathan / Nathaniel
Oliver
Lucas
Liam
Reece (Rhys)
Ross
William (a fave here and i like Billy as nn - but oh HATES it)
Leon
Zachary or Zachariah

please please please no Alfie...we know 14 under 4 between us ATLEAST and i heard 3 in the supermarket today......

HoldTouchEngage · 24/04/2012 21:45

OH is Mark - forgot to say that and he really likes his name, have agreed it as a middle name if we were ever blessed with another boy! I'm not too keen as fond it a little plain - ALTHOUGH as you say i've not met any 'little' ones with that name! Wink x

AliveSheCried · 24/04/2012 21:46

My boy´s called Gabriel - I think that would sound fab in a yorks accent!
