Baby boy due soon and inspiration has yet to strike!

It's got to be relatively easy to spell/pronounce, not too "aspirational" (eg Benedict/Arlo/Caspian type things). We would like to avoid anything starting with H as we are from Yorkshire :)

Scottish/Irish names fine as long as they are not too difficult to spell (nothing with fadas!)

Ideally a "classless" name that could take you from cradle to grave...we're not asking for much eh!

Don't have a problem with long names that can be shortened or short names that can't.

Relatively popular is fine but would prefer to avoid the James/Thomas type names i.e. five in every class. We are in an area where the most popular names are heavily used.

Can anybody help!

Peter, George, Michael or Matthew all fit your bill.
I'm in Yorkshire too, not a posh bit at all, and there's a real range of names, I think anything goes to be honest!

David
DHs name. Classic and I don't know many under the age of 30.

MerryMarigold · 24/04/2012 22:09

Oh yes. David is fab (but not Dave).

I agree, Benedict is VERY aspirational (or else you're already upper class, in which case you're not aspiring to it).

Not sure if you regard these as 'aspirational' but I think they're quite nice and not heavily used

I like the classic names such as

Michael
Philip
Thomas

Not at all keen on Benedict.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, I think we may have a couple of contenders!

I seem to have touched a nerve by suggesting that Benedict may seem a trifle "aspirational" to some, no offence intended just trying to illustrate what wouldn't suit for us.

HoldTouchEngage I, and my accent, went west along the M62 many years ago! Still in god's own county like :)

Basically, you want a Kate-type name. Have a look at this article which sings its praises if you're interested: www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-11765366

You might like to consider:
Adam
Adrian
Alexander
Alistair
Andrew
Anthony
Christopher
David
Dominic
Euan
James
Joel
Jonathan
Joseph
Leo
Luke
Matthew
Nicholas
Paul
Philip
Richard
Robert
Simon
Stephen
Stewart/Stuart
Timothy

With some of these names, they lend you a bit of flexibility. Your Philip could be a Philip, he could be a Phil, or he could even be a Pip or Pippin. Nicholas could be a Nick or a Nicky; Robert a Rob or a Bob; Christopher a Chris or a Kit... So depending whether he's a forklift truck driver or an Oxford academic, he's got a name that will suit him.

helenovhull · 25/04/2012 11:07

Stellan that is exactly what we want! DD isn't a Kate but she has a vaguely similar name with that sort of flexibility and we would like something that does the same for DS.

We've got a nice shortlist now and we're going to wait and see which name he looks like! Thank you for all your input everyone :)

George is still the best

Another vote for Liam.

It's my fav boys name, not too many about around here and all the Liam's I've met have been really sweet boys.

Ben / Benjamin?
