Help: I only like 1 boys name which DP doesn't like!

DPs surname is similar to Hemming. I LOVE the name Arthur and kinda like Oliver, but don't love it.

DP likes Oliver but doesn't like Arthur as it's an old man name Sad.

Please can someone help me find a name I like as much as Arthur? I don't want to 'settle' for Oliver.

My only criteria is I like 'real' names & it has to go well with surname.

Thanks.

Arlo? It's more "modern", sort of combines Oliver and Arthur...if you squint...
Henry? Classic but also quite cool at the moment, not "old man" but not too modern.
Robert? Stanley? Peter?

janie2 · 22/04/2012 21:40

Arthur is becoming popular so I don't think your DP is right in saying it's old manish. My nephew is Arthur and it suits him totally, and he's not very old man in his approach ot life!!!

How about George, Robert, Samuel, Edward, Henry?

janie2 · 22/04/2012 21:41

sorry Hatebeak, two of the names you mention Blush

shouldIbecrossaboutthis · 22/04/2012 21:41

Thanks for the suggestions hatebeak, they are all really lovely but none of them feel 'right' for me...

I don't not like Arlo, I just don't feel it's real enough? Maybe DP could use it as a nn for Arthur Hmm.

Henry Hemming, doesn't go for me, I'm not a fan of the literation and it sounds a bit like a used car salesman doing a cheesy TV advert?

Robert is a significant ex

Stanley is a cousin as is Peter.

I should also say that Jacob, Jack, Charlie, Finlay, Joshua, Samuel, Adam, Lee, Paul, Ian, Ethan, Jonas, George and Nathan all can't be used as are close family and friends.

shouldIbecrossaboutthis · 22/04/2012 21:45

Thanks janie2, I do love George & Samuel but sadly we can't use either.

I do like Edward but feel it's a bit too posh for us? Also I don't feel it has such a good ring as Arthur Hemming or Oliver Hemming.

Sorry, I know I am really fussy. I'm driving myself mad to be honest.

ok, had another think. You seem to like the names I like so here was our shortlist for boys - we chose James (after my lovely grandad!)

Fergus
Angus
John
Archie

janie2 · 22/04/2012 21:50

ha ha! I'd have said Arthur was more posh......funny how we associate names Grin

Collision · 22/04/2012 21:51

Theo
Maxwell Max for short
Benedict

spammertime · 22/04/2012 21:57

Biased, but Arthur is great... Artie, Thor, Bear when they are little, Art when they're a teenager... Passes the judge / mp test when they're an adult, too.

Oliver is lovely too but I know just what you mean.

How about Isaac, Jacob, Jago (Cornish version of James)?

shouldIbecrossaboutthis · 22/04/2012 21:57

Thanks again everyone for the suggestions.

Janie, I feel like Arthur is a bit posh, but not as posh as Edward, it's kind of fake posh. I don't know if this makes any sense to people who aren't me Blush

Fergus - Have terrible name association here with a "challenging" child I once looked after
Angus - DP HATES
John - Not sure it goes as well with surname as Arthur/Oliver
Archie - my best friends surname is very similar to this so not too sure if it's 'allowed'.

Thanks Collision for the suggestions, I don't really like Theo and Benedict, for no real tangible reason. But I do like Maxwell but again not sure it goes as well with the surname as Arthur/Oliver.

spammertime, thank you so much for backing up Arthur, not many people seem to like it, I just LOVE it. Agree about the nicknames too, I really though DP would go for the nickname Thor, as he is a bit of a comic geek but he says it can't be used for a baby. He has suggested he calls the baby Archie for a NN but it's not a nickname, it's a whole new name!

Isaac and Jacob are both lovely, we can't use Jacob as it's a good friends son, Isaac is a little boy I have looked after for 5 years so that is out too. Jago, whilst lovely, isn't very old manny me.

I just really like Arthur and really there isn't anything similar is there? [wails]

How about

Isaac
Miles
Reuben
Benjamin
Charles/Charlie
Stephen
Alexander

A bit random, I know Smile

janie2 · 22/04/2012 22:07

keep working on DP I say!! How long have you got? is it your first? if so play the "I've just done all this work, I'm naming this child!" card Grin

spammertime · 22/04/2012 22:08

Like I say I'm biased so I totally agree...!!

I quite liked Francis (Frankie), Wilfred (Wilf), Ernest (Ernie) but no, none of them quite as much!

My advice - let him get used to it - DH really wasn't sure about my boys choice for DC3 - in the end she was a girl, but he would have totally gone with my boys choice had she been a he!

Rufus was also on our list?

johnnycomelurky · 22/04/2012 22:09

Oops x-post, I see Isaac is out. Couldn't your DH call him Artie as a baby and then Thor later (if he wanted)?

Gapants · 22/04/2012 22:11

Just name the baby pretty much as soon as you have given birth no DH in the land can refuse his partner after the mammoth task of labour.

shouldIbecrossaboutthis · 22/04/2012 22:12

Rufus, he says, is like a dog. The thing is he is stubborn and will jsut continue to say no, on the basis that he said no, I don't think he is going to get used to it!

I think I might change tact and start looking at names that go with my surname, as really the only one I like that goes with his is Arthur.

there is nothing wrong with some of the names suggested, they just don't feel right to me. I know that sounds weird and I'm not normally the type of person that thinks like this, but I just can't see myself being happy calling the baby by any other Christian name with his surname.

So what goes well with Evans... I quite like Thomas Grin

OP posts:
Gapants · 22/04/2012 22:12

Theodore
Christian
Douglas

shouldIbecrossaboutthis · 22/04/2012 22:16

gapants I have suggester Bear, Thor, Art, Artie and AJ (Arthur James) and he says no to all of them. They sounds too daft, American (bearing in mind when we were looking at girls name before we found out the sex he suggested, Ryder, Amber and Kyra) and clichéd?!

OP posts:
MimsieD · 22/04/2012 22:17

Was just about to suggest Artie for a nickname of Arthur. It sounds LOADS like Archie, but is an "official" nickname for Arthur.

If Archie is acceptable to you both I think the fact it's close to a friends surname is a lovely thing.

Hope you find a name that works for you both - it's so tricky isn't it! I wanted Alfie for a boy, but DH vetoed it so we went with Archie.. Now I can't imagine him being anything else and LOVE it - I'm glad we went with Archie.

All the best

BeaditAli · 22/04/2012 22:22

Austin, Otto, Fraser, another vote for Christian, Laurence
Arthur is fab by the way!

BeaditAli · 22/04/2012 22:26

Jude Arthur Evans Grin

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 22/04/2012 22:26

I don't like Arthur, but I love Artie - I didn't at first but one of the kids had a classmate Artie and he was lovely :) DH's often don't have as much exposure to small children/babies so don't realise when names shift from 'old man' to 'current' again. I remember when the current ones started coming back in and I thought they were ghastly (Henry, Harry, Charles - 1996) now they are 'normal' again :) Tell him he just needs to 'get with it' Grin

shouldIbecrossaboutthis · 22/04/2012 22:33

DP says Artie is a poncy posh nickname and Archie is a down to earth name, apparently they are in a different 'class'.

A friend just suggested Seth Arthur Hemming...

Is Seth a real name?

OP posts:
Clary · 22/04/2012 22:40

Arthur is a lovely lovely name. No need for a nickname IME.

You could tell DP that old men's names are very fashionable now and will just be regular names for kids.

Other names I bracket with Arthur include Stanley, Frederick (Freddie), William, Albert, George, Alfred, Edward, Edwin, Ernest, Henry. I see you have already said no to George, Stanley, Edward and Henry...

Oliver is a nice name but v v popular you might like to know. 3 in Ds2's school year (8-9yo, about 25 boys in the year).
