Help: I only like 1 boys name which DP doesn't like!

DPs surname is similar to Hemming. I LOVE the name Arthur and kinda like Oliver, but don't love it.

DP likes Oliver but doesn't like Arthur as it's an old man name Sad.

Please can someone help me find a name I like as much as Arthur? I don't want to 'settle' for Oliver.

My only criteria is I like 'real' names & it has to go well with surname.

Thanks.

Yup Oliver is very popular here too I know 12 under 4 Sad I think that's another reason I don't love it even thought I feel like it goes so well with his surname.

I wanted Sidney for DS1 but was vetoes by Dh. You can have it if you like. Smile

Also got vetoed on DS2's name that I loved - Gregory.

So my sons Sid and Gregory are not called that at all!

hatebeak · 22/04/2012 23:04

Seth is very much a real name! And a good one at that.

shouldIbecrossaboutthis · 22/04/2012 23:09

thanks hatebeak, I wondered if it might be short for something, like Seb..

My friend's son is called Seth. It means 'appointed' in Hebrew. Lovely name IMO!

I have an Archie Smile

I think your idea of going for names that match your surname may be the key to getting your DP to agree to calling your son Arthur! Passing on his surname is probably going to be more important to him than vetoing Arthur. Clever tactic!

cheekydino · 23/04/2012 09:00

Jonathan? Has great range of nicknames and not too popular.
Philip nn pip? Andrew nn drew?

BeeBread · 23/04/2012 09:02

Anthony, Julian, Jonathan and Jeremy are all strong 3-syllable names (like Oliver) and would go well with Hemming?

shouldIbecrossaboutthis · 23/04/2012 10:02

Cheekydino and BeeBread, I have suggested Anthony, Andrew and Jonathan and they also fall into the "old man" category DP thinks. Jeremy remind me of Jeremy Kyle Sad.

I think DP is now considering Arthur rather than outright saying "no it's an old mans name" after I had a snot and tear filled 30 minutes an emotional 5 minutes last night.

I tried to not cry calmly explain to him that I really can't think of any names that go as well with his surname that feel as 'right' as Arthur and that even though I liked the name Oliver, I thought it would just be so popular when our DS gets to school. So our only alternative was to look at names that went with my surname / a double barrelled Hemming-Evans surname.

He agreed to put Arthur back on the list, if he can pick the middle name and if he looks like an Arthur which obviously he will.

I also quite like Seth Arthur now, so I don't feel as doomed as I did last night. Thanks for all the fab suggestions. BTW I'm only 18 weeks, but am a control freak and there isn't a lot you get to control with pregnancy so I'm taking my chances where I can! Grin

Keep trying with Arthur, it's great, but feel free to use Sidney and Albert because I'm not allowed any more babies and DC was a DD.

MarySA · 23/04/2012 12:50

Personally I'm not keen on Arthur. But if you like it then try and persuade your DP to go along with it. I am frankly amazed at the resurgence of all those old names. It will be Walter, Godfrey, Wilfred next. Or perhaps they are already here. I think it's hard for some people like me not to think of some of these names as old fashioned names. Because I would only remember absolutely ancient great uncles of friends called Arthur.

Shanghaidiva · 23/04/2012 12:54

One more suggestion for you Wink
Oscar....

Janoschi · 23/04/2012 16:00

Archie is down-to-earth? It's short for Archibald, for heaven's sake.

Seth is a real name.

Macsen is a bit Maxwell-ish but with a different ending. It's Welsh but easy to pronounce I think.

I know 2 Arthurs. One is 28, the other was born 3 weeks ago. The name works well for both! Older Arthur goes by the name Arth.

emmyloo2 · 24/04/2012 14:24

Arthur is a fabulous name. I originally suggested this to my DH for my next DS should I ever have one. He said no at first but then gradually came to love it and now it is first on my list if I have another DS.

Stick with it - it is truly fabulous!!!

HoldTouchEngage · 24/04/2012 23:05

Saul

Alicadabra · 24/04/2012 23:24

Many of these names make me think of Jeeves and Wooster so... Bertie?
Augustus? (I think Augustus Hemming has a lovely ring to it, and he could be Gus for short) Can't think of any others from J&W except Marmaduke which does sound quite distinguished but probably rather dated.

I do also think that Arthur is lovely so if none of these appeal, stick to your guns OP!

racingheart · 24/04/2012 23:36

Love Arthur. Used to teach the most adorable little boy called Arthur years ago, well before it was a fashionable name. Deff not an old man name any more, and I love all the shortened versions of it that you've mentioned.

Stellan · 25/04/2012 10:31

shouldIbecrossaboutthis - I really like Arthur and think it's a fantastic job. If you like Arthur and your husband likes Archie, how about Archer? You could use Archie as a nickname.

Stellan · 25/04/2012 10:36

Having only skimmed the thread, I'm sorry if some of these are off the mark:

Andrew Hemming
Anthony Hemming
Archer Hemming
Arthur Hemming
Clement Hemming
Daniel Hemming
Douglas Hemming
Edward Hemming
Jesse Hemming
John Hemming
Owen Hemming
Patrick Hemming
Ralph Hemming
Theodore Hemming

Um, you're not married? How about you make the point that as you're being so kind as to allow your baby to be given someone else's surname, when you're the one actually giving birth to them, then he should maybe start compromising a bit more?

Suggest that if he can't be ok with Arthur then start looking for names that go well with your surname. Think you might find that suddenly Arthur isn't 'old fashioned.'

Or he could be pleased and gratified that the baby is to have his surname, give you first dibs with the first name, and make sure the middle name is one from his list too.

VickyandAlistair · 26/04/2012 17:49

What about Alistair? I am biased though..
