What do the people of Mumsnet think?

Nay.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 17/04/2012 18:40

My granny (born 1902) was a Nelly.

She hated it.

MrsJohnDeere · 17/04/2012 18:43

Nell is fine.

Nelly = elephant to me

DawnOfTheDee · 17/04/2012 18:46

Would you be calling her Penelope then shortening to Nelly? Tbh I prefer Nell as the shortened version...much nicer.

Ecgwynn · 17/04/2012 18:47

What about Eleanor with Nelly as a nickname? It's quite cute for a little girl but I don't think it's a serious adult's name. Imagine if she got a job working for the inland revenue and her name was Nelly!

Gef · 17/04/2012 18:48

Can't Nell also be nn for Helen?

charitygirl · 17/04/2012 18:49

Nelly is silly. Nell is lovely. I would use as a nickname for Penelope.

Bert2e · 17/04/2012 18:49

Not on my nelly!

Rindercella · 17/04/2012 18:52

Better than Nelly for a boy I guess! Grin

Not that keen tbh. Like the idea of Eleanor with nickname of Nelly (if you
must). Or, just Nell - lovely.

nizlopi · 17/04/2012 18:58

Nelly the Elephant packed her trunk and trundled off to the circus, off she went with a trumpety trump.

Trump.

Trump.

Trump.

...

No. Don't.

LittleFrieda · 17/04/2012 19:10

It's not for me. It's someone else's suggestion. I thought "Nelly the elephant" too but didn't know if I was being silly.

Nelly the elephant.

Not on your Nelly.

Smelly Nelly.

Nell

LittleFrieda · 17/04/2012 19:17

Yes, Nell is gorgeous. I love Eleanor too.

I don't like it, but like Nell, Eleanor, Penelope, etc, it could also be short for Cornelia.

If you like Nelly, then I think great, go for it - but giving it her as a nickname, with one of these others on the birth certificate, would give her (or you) the option to change it when she got a bit older.

crowface · 17/04/2012 19:20

I love it! It's my nan's name. So what about Nelly the elephant etc. kids will find a reason to pick on any name. If I ever have a daughter she will be Nell. Would be Nellie, but Nell goes better with our surname.

Just to add, a pp said what about if she gets a job doing x. Well I think nick names as proper names will be the norm by then. My son is called a nickname version of a name, and names like Alfie, Charlie etc are more normal than Alfred and Charles nowadays.

HavePatience · 17/04/2012 19:25

Nellie better than Nelly. Perhaps name her Nell and call her Nellie at home?

UnnamedFemaleProtagonist · 17/04/2012 19:26

My friend has a Nell. So called because everyone said that she shouldn't call her Nelly because of teasing. She is 4 now and known by everyone as Nelly. Stick to your guns.

NeedsInspirationFor2012Name · 17/04/2012 19:32

My friend has a Nell but is called Nelly affectionately or Nellaroony Grin

EmpireBiscuit · 17/04/2012 19:34

Nell is Helen I thought.

I hate Eleanor (but only because I know one in RL and she is a nasty piece of work).

DawnOfTheDee · 17/04/2012 19:34

Nelly

DawnOfTheDee · 17/04/2012 19:35

mirry2 · 17/04/2012 19:37
