Anyone got a Hermione? What is the first thing that people say..?

Hi,

We are thinking about Hermione as a name for dc3 - we already have a Shakesperean name (but not an obvious one) for dd2, so it would fit well. My worries are... Harry Potter! Has it been ruined forever and will people just snigger?
Also, any nickname suggestions welcome, as all I can think of is Minnie, which actually was my g.grandmother's name.

I like it, and I think the whole Harry Potter thing will die down in a few years anyway. Minnie is cute :)

SoFarWeAreEqual · 17/04/2012 14:06

I don't have a Hermione but I think it is really lovely. There is another thread about it at the moment and I have cut and pasted my response from that one:

The Harry Potter thing hasn't put tens of thousands of people off naming their child Harry. I doubt many people would make more than a fleeting connection and it will all be different in ten years anyway. A name is for life after all.

So I say go for it if you love it. Much better than Minnie (although that is cute on a little girl and lovely for an old lady, not so sure about the years in between).

People would say 'Hello Hermione'.

People would think 'Is that her real name? She must be posh'.

nickelhasababy · 17/04/2012 15:14

I would say "oh, beautiful name"
(and if i knew the person better would say that my first car was called Hermione)

I love that name.

sonniboo · 17/04/2012 15:19

"Hello Hermione" is what I would say. I like it but I'm not keen on Minnie.

At least they will know how to pronounce it now.

They will associate it with HP rather than Shakespeare. Of course they will. And you will get comments about it.

I know 2, one has a sister with another name from Greek classics, the other has a sister with a rather wacky name (think island in the middle of the Indian ocean) I imagine that although neither had HP in mind when they chose the name they've had to deal with the inevitable comments.

Harry is different, because it was already very mainstream I think.

DottieRose · 18/04/2012 12:26

I think Hermione is a beautiful name, and if I met one I would not think of Harry Potter straight away! Anyway there are tons of Harry's out there and I bet they dont worry about the HP connection!

minipie · 18/04/2012 12:33

Re nicknames: I know of a Hermione whose nn is Worm...

How about Mina or Maya as nns?

Stellan · 18/04/2012 12:53

I thought:

  1. Harry Potter
  2. Hermione Norris

Don't think either are bad associations, really, but I would get sick of Harry Potter references. While there are plenty of other notable Harrys, there aren't that many notable Hermiones so the association is going to be REALLY strong in most people's minds with the few that there are.

FluffStar · 18/04/2012 13:06

First thought was Harry Potter and I have never read a book or seen a film. They are obviously that popular. Sorry.

However if you like it then use it or you will kick yourself later.

billsmill · 18/04/2012 13:08

My sister with absolute amazement 'are you sure you pronounce it like that?'
Er yes, have you not seen Harry Potter?
It's a beautiful name.

ragged · 18/04/2012 13:08

HP, but she's an inspirational character in that, don't see the problem.

DialsMavis · 18/04/2012 13:12

Love it, it would be asscociated with Harry Potter, but so what?

blackteaplease · 18/04/2012 14:27

My first thought was Jilly Cooper, not Harry Potter!

But as others have said at least people will know how to pronounce it and there are so many Harry's around (at least three in dd's nursery class).

Snapespeare · 18/04/2012 15:22

Harry Potter Hermoine is brave, intelligent, a fierce friend and a bit middle class has bushy hair.

Not terrible attributes at all - I would be happy with the association! (that said, If DSs had been born a bit later it is highly likely their middle names would have been Remus and Severus, so please do take that into account when listening to my opinion...)

nizlopi · 18/04/2012 19:33

There are worst characters to have the same name as.

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 18/04/2012 19:35

It's my dd's middle name. The first thing people say is Harry potter, but I can live with that. No one thinks of Shakespeare.

Hulababy · 18/04/2012 19:38

Hermione in HP is not a negative charactrer, so can't really see a problem tbh. It doesn't seem to have stopped people naming their baby Harry either.

I like it.

At least now people know how to pronounce it too.

Clawdy · 18/04/2012 20:50

Lovely name, and at least since the HP films, people know how to pronounce it properly! Friend's DD used to get "Hermiowny"! She's often known as Mio.

PoppyWearer · 18/04/2012 21:57

I know a grown-up Hermione and she wears it well - it works for a grown-up.

HandMadeTail · 18/04/2012 22:01

I always wanted to call my first DD Pheobe, but didn't because of Friends. Silly, really, because I don't think anyone would think about that now.

iGaveUpTeaToControlCats · 03/09/2012 20:01

Hermione is a really nice name - which as well as Minnie could be shortened to Mione or Mionie. If they are tomboyish maybe even something like Hero?

And Hermione from Harry Potter is a strong female character - incredibly hard working at school, brave, and not willing to put up with rubbish from her friends; but also always being their when they need her assistance. Hermione Granger is not a bad person to be associated with - and after a while, people who know her will stop thinking of Hermione from Harry Potter and will attribute the name to her instead.

I would go for it. :)

gazzalw · 03/09/2012 20:05

We've got one - very pukka and upper-class - but she's a cat! She is very much like the Harry Potter character though! And we do call her Mione too Grin

PandaWatch · 03/09/2012 20:40

I would think of HP but as others have said she is a great character and the books are a widely adored series so can't see anything wrong with that! I think it's beautiful. And Minnie is a very cute nn , which she could easily shed as an adult If she wanted to (I say that as someone who only tolerates my name being shortened by my very nearest and dearest!)
