Anyone got a Hermione? What is the first thing that people say..?

Hi,

We are thinking about Hermione as a name for dc3 - we already have a Shakesperean name (but not an obvious one) for dd2, so it would fit well. My worries are... Harry Potter! Has it been ruined forever and will people just snigger?
Also, any nickname suggestions welcome, as all I can think of is Minnie, which actually was my g.grandmother's name.

My first thought is always Hermione Granger. I think it's a lovely name.

TwllBach · 03/09/2012 20:52

I would think of Harry potter but I am the sort of person who would name their child after a character from a book Blush I would definitely use it, but I have always wondered what nn I would use - I hadn't considered Minnie!

I know a Hermione who's known to everyone as Hemmy. Lovely name!

MrsJohnDeere · 05/09/2012 12:05

I would think HP but that's no bad thing. Hermione in HP is great!

HelenofSparta · 05/09/2012 20:39

I have a Hermione. People's first response is the inevitable Harry Potter response. Older generation (my grandmother) not so much, they remember Hemione Gingold, an actress!
My general response is, yes like Harry Potter, bu we drew our inspiration from Greek classic literature (Helen of Troys daughter with Menalaus) and she is also in Shakespeare's 'A Winters Tale'
Although, when it is someone I will never see again like a shop girl, I now just tend to smile as cannot be bothered!
What is your other daughters name?

Anonymumous · 05/09/2012 21:04

I like it. I think, if anything, it's become more of a "normal" name since Harry Potter - people have heard of it, they know how to spell it and how to pronounce it. And if people think you named her after Hermione Granger instead of a Shakespearean character, what does it matter?

telsa · 05/09/2012 21:23

My first thought is of Hermione Lee, who writes about women writers. But I haven't read HP, which is by a woman writer too, so I hear!

FelicitywasSarca · 05/09/2012 21:28

Nice and 'Mima' is a pretty nickname.

Jakeyblueblue · 05/09/2012 22:53

I love it and it was on my list for ds if he'd of been a girl. Smile

hellymelly · 05/09/2012 22:57

There's also the Bowie song "letter to Hermione"...

I have a Hermione! We shorten it to Mi. Some people spot me for the Harry Potter obessive that I am for it but there are plently of people out there that have never heard of it, or who associate it first and formost with Shakespeare. I have a fabulous bit of home video of her being chased through our local market place by a darlek asking her where her magic wand is...
Last time I checked it was still out of the top 10,000 most popular baby names. She is regularly asked to spell it, though. As we shorted it to Mi a lot of people also assume she's a Mya, Mia or something similar.
At 9 she loves her name. She's the kind of girl that can carry off a Harry Potter Hermione, though. (Same sort of girl I was, which is why I love the character.) It would feel a bit wrong if she wasn't academically strong and even a bit bossy with it. As an insurance policy she has a very ordinary middle name that I'd be happy for her to use if she ever preferred.

hernqh · 02/08/2022 20:09

Really? Looks like it isn't leaving anytime soon :).

PleaseMind · 02/08/2022 20:10

This is a very old thread

LT2 · 02/08/2022 20:17

I wouldn't personally, because of HP

MeenzAmRhoi · 02/08/2022 20:50

I do think of HP too but it's not a negative association. It's also a pretty name so I'd go for it

babyjellyfish · 02/08/2022 20:57

It does make me think of Harry Potter, and I think Harry Potter is here to stay.

But I wouldn't be put off by that.

I've only ever met one Hermione and she was absolutely lovely.

Icouldabeenalawyer · 02/08/2022 21:02

Love the name. I know of a Hermione who gets called Mimi

FayCarew · 03/08/2022 11:33

I was familiar with the name long before Harry Potter and pronunciation wasn't an issue

CircleofWillis · 03/08/2022 11:36

🧟‍♀️ !!!ZOMBIE ALERT!!! 🧟‍♀️

ICriedAllTheWayToTheChipShop · 03/08/2022 11:43

Yes, zombie alert, but it's interesting that one of the original comments was that HP would "die down in a few years" and yet here we are ten years later and people still have that association!

drpet49 · 03/08/2022 11:47

Harry Potter. And I don’t even like Harry Potter

rightonthyme · 03/08/2022 12:14

I looooove the name Hermione and yes my first thought would be The Winter's Tale!

rightonthyme · 03/08/2022 12:20

Oh heck I've been got by a zombie thread. Wonder if there's a 10 y/o Hermione around now...

livinchina · 03/08/2022 18:07

I had Hermione on my list after St Hermione 😊
