Does Tallulah really conjure up a stripper?

my dh just loves Tallulah for a girl and we can't agree on any other names we both like. We want something a little different and
poshish but I'm just worried when they areolder could they really be a doctor or teacher with the name. My dh seems to think there wouldn't be a problem but he is quite confident and opinionated! Could I call a little girl this?

sorry but it sounds stripperish to me. But your baby your choice lol

Abcinthia · 16/04/2012 21:42

It makes me think of showgirls because of the song from the film Bugsy Malone

BackforGood · 16/04/2012 21:44

Well - night club singer at best mind, my ds has just been starring in Bugsy Malone so I might be more that way of thinking than usual.

aliportico · 16/04/2012 21:44

I have a Tallulah and, well, I suppose she does like to take her clothes off ... :o She's a bit of a tomboy and I can't imagine anyone meets her and thinks stripper. Most people refer to Bugsy Malone.

I'm pretty sure that if she ever becomes a doctor or teacher she'll be Dr or Ms Portico, so, no, I'm not worried about it :-)

kickmewhenimdown · 16/04/2012 21:46

I love the name Tallulah and have pre warned dp that should i have a girl it comes top of my list. He is not as keen. But if it is good enough for Bruce Willis and simon le bon then is good enough for me! I always think stripperish names are like candy and crystal, nothing like Tallulah. I reminds me more of Hawaii for some strange reason!

meditrina · 16/04/2012 21:46

I think it's a wonderful Celtic name, which should even have the Pope's approval because of the saint.

Londmum · 16/04/2012 21:51

Well the last 3 posts have really made me feel
More positive- I suppose you worry about peoples reactions even though I shouldn't - my dh doesn't care about what people think. What about nns?

FrillyMilly · 16/04/2012 21:52

It just reminds me of Bugsy Malone.

aliportico · 16/04/2012 21:53

We call her Lulah. I like Tally too but it doesn't go with Ali :-)

Londmum · 16/04/2012 21:56

Thanks Ali love Lulah!! I think my dh may get his way! We dont know what we are having but boys name has been sorted for ages!

I like Tallulah and personally I can't think of any negative connotations.

lovebunny · 16/04/2012 22:05

lulah is the slang word for penis, sub-continent
sorry.

lovebunny · 16/04/2012 22:06

perhaps 'a' would have been better than 'the'.

susiedaisy · 16/04/2012 22:06

My god daughter is called tallulah and it's a lovely name she's called tally for short, never thought of it as a strippers nameHmm

JustHecate · 16/04/2012 22:06

I think it's pretty enough. However, I simply cannot take it seriously since I learned about the poor child named 'Tallulah Does The Hula From Hawaii'

Yes. Honestly. Sad

Ever since then, whenever I hear the name Tallulah, I add Does The Hula From Hawaii

It's ruined the name for me, frankly.

I think it's alright and if you like it then thats the main thing, there is a tallulah at DS nursery and no one things it's weird.

ipanicked · 16/04/2012 22:34

I only learnt that it apparently had stripper connotations on mn! I think of that chicken in the maisy books called tallulah. I say as the mother of a DD with a name deemed stripper-ish by mn, if you love it, use it. You could also use lulu as a nn too.

mamalovesmojitos · 16/04/2012 22:36

I like it. Reminds me of bugsy Malone but in a good way Smile. Not sure why it's associated with strippers.

bibbitybobbitybunny · 16/04/2012 22:37

Yes, and becoming surprisingly common too.

threeleftfeet · 16/04/2012 23:18

I like Tallulah and Lulah's great :)

toobreathless · 17/04/2012 01:10

Oops. Sorry, my post on your other name thread might have contributed to this.

To me yes Talluhah = stripper personally. I feel the same way to some extent about Lola. But, it's clearly a personal thing & not everyone has the same association.

Aliportico: I'm a doctor & I am only ever called 'Dr Surname' by the mortuary, on official letters & by some elderly patients. To everyone else including most of the patients I am called by my first name. So I would caution people not to think that a professional would not be using there first name in a professional capacity.

nooka · 17/04/2012 02:26

For me I think that the problem with Tallulah is more that it's a bit silly sounding. Perhaps because Bugsy Malone is just so associated with my childhood I just can't imagine an adult choosing this as a name (except for celebrities who seem to prefer the daft when it comes to names). Plus she was a bit of a sad character really. Possibly the chicken from Maisy is more relevant now though!

Have to say if you are looking for something that sounds a bit 'posh' Tallulah probably isn't the way to go.

PoorAudreyHorseface · 17/04/2012 02:43

agree with nooka, Tallulah is a silly sounding name.
