Monty - thoughts?

DC3 due in 10 weeks and this is the only name DH and I can agree on! Does it have to be short for Montgomery or Montague?

I knew a Maurice who went by Monty.

I know a Monty who is just that. He's about 4 months now I think and very cute.

Great name I think! My best friend's boy is Monty and it really suits him. Occasionally she wishes she had called him Montgomery...anyway, I think it's lovely either way.

Kind of nice, but mega try-hard and getting lots more popular... so becoming a bit of a stereotypically try-hard name. Sorry you did ask.

I love it. I know of three under-fives in my area (South East).

I am not posh enough to use it (I can imagine my family's response if i did!) but I think it is gorgeous.

Some interesting responses :) When does a name become try hard? Presumably until it becomes too popular. It's just impossible to find nice, classic boys names that won't be one of four in their class.

I don't know any Montys round here - South East Market town. We have lots of Harrys, Freddie's, Zac etc.

Monty is lovely. Why on earth wouldn't you 'try hard' to find a lovely underused name for your child? Thankfully we have different tastes, because I seem to love names some of you call 'try hard' ! But isn't it great to have lots of different names?

My friend has had a Montgomery and he is normally Monty. I quite like it, Montgomery seems such a large name for a little one but Monty is cute.

But children don't stay small forever - and Montgomery is a lovely, elegant name for a grown man imo.

I think this current trend for short, cutesy names (Alfie, Archie, Charlie, Freddie, Ellie, etc) is going to reverse at some point and people will want more solid names.

My cat was Monty.

I have a Monty. He is nearly three and suits his name. Dont know any other Montys except for a 20 yr old and we live in SW London. He is just Monty, as we couldnt agree on a full name, Montmorency, Montagu or Montgomery, my favourite was Montezuma, but then you really are heading down the 'try hard' route! Other names I love, but didnt have the guts for were Wolfgang 'wolfie' and Fox! So think Monty got off lightly!!! He now has a little sister called Eliza who was very nearly Clara so OP and I seem to have similar taste in names.

Should add that the mum of the Monty I know is lovely - educated and well spoken, but not posh, or try-hard.

Montague - but if it was me i would just go for Monty - because i think it's a lovely name in it's own right.

I just think of lecherous Uncle Monty in Withnail & I - so no.

But that may just be me.

Cute for a West Highland Terrier, not so for a child.
