DC3 due in 10 weeks and this is the only name DH and I can agree on! Does it have to be short for Montgomery or Montague?

Do your worst.

I like it very much.

DottieRose · 16/04/2012 19:18

I simply adore Monty but cannot go for it as my aunts dog is called Monty! Only for that it would be a definate!

gafhyb · 16/04/2012 19:23

Sorry. It's on the posh end of the name continuum - Jasper, Jonty, Jago

Montsti · 16/04/2012 19:35

I love Montgomery - nn. Monty not so much but still ok. Personally prefer longer/full names on BC too, but just a personal thing...

Londmum · 16/04/2012 21:42

Love it just leave as monty and I'm sure he'll be gorgeous and a heartbreaker with that name!

sonniboo · 16/04/2012 21:43

"Sorry. It's on the posh end of the name continuum - Jasper, Jonty, Jago"

Does that make it any less nice? Hmm What is this obsession with 'class' on mumsnet - let's let people not their name determine their character!

gafhyb · 17/04/2012 18:18

I don't like it just because it sounds posh:I like Charles, William, Philip, etc etc. Monty is not a strong-sounding name, to my ears.

OTOH, if you name you child something that result in people will making assumptions about you, then you need to be aware of that. I have a very unusaul name. People make assumptions about me on the basis of that. If I had a choice, I'd have chosen something for myself that fits who I am.

gafhyb · 17/04/2012 18:19

unusual

wigglybeezer · 17/04/2012 18:21

I only know labradors called Monty (real ones and DS!'s toy one!), mind you, you wouldn't last 5 minutes with the name Monty in rural Scotland so my input is probably invalid.

BringBack1996 · 17/04/2012 18:32

I think it's lovely and no less likely to suit a 40 year old than Montague!

sonniboo · 17/04/2012 18:38

" I'd have chosen something for myself that fits who I am."

But surely your character determines who you are, not the collection of letters that form your name. Or do you mean you want your name to have a specific meaning?

gafhyb · 17/04/2012 18:45

Of course it doesn't determine my character. But I would rather not have had to spell it, explain where it comes from, what it means.

gafhyb · 17/04/2012 18:45

... none of which applies to Monty.

countrybump · 17/04/2012 18:47

I know a 45 year old Monty, short for Montague, and his Dad is also a Montague.

I love it, and had DD been a DS she may have been a Monty - if I could have convinced DH that it didn't matter that it was also the name of the dog over the road!

gafhyb · 17/04/2012 18:49

So, I'm thinking, and maybe it's because it doubles as a dog's name that makes me not like it (like Jasper). Is there inherently something not-ver-serious about a name someone would give their dog?

And do "cool" people name their dogs "person" names, like Dave, and Reg?

notactuallyme · 17/04/2012 18:50

I am biased as the only one I know has a vile mother.

BUCHAREST -I hope this is not me!

I love the name, and it really suits ds - i call him Mont a lot, but really he is Montgomery - i would probably have used Montel if I had really thought about it. The posh thing doesnt really come into it - I am middle class, state school for the dcs, fairly ok spoken etc - noone has ever raised an eyebrow up or down the poshness ladder.

gafhyb · 17/04/2012 18:54

I am going away now, before I offend anyone else.

Sorry OP

I really like it. The family we know with one are lovely and couldn't be further from try hard. Great to have names that aren't Oliver or Ben...
