What do you think of Harry as a name rather than as a nickname for Henry. Is it a bit Alfie/Archie/Finlay?

Winkly · 12/04/2012 22:12

Incredibly popular. Makes people think of Harry Potter. Nice name though.

OliviaLMumsnet · 12/04/2012 22:15

My DS is Henry
There are a LOT of people who don't know that Harry was originally a nn for Henry.
But as winkly said, v popular - top 3 IIRC in the last few years (Henry is top 20)

welovesausagedogs · 12/04/2012 22:16

I really like Harry. I never understand it as a nn, why you have a nickname that has the same number of letters as your actual name and doesn't really have any connection.

yellowflowers · 12/04/2012 22:17

I am a total div - never thought of Harry Potter. OliviaMumsnet - do you call him Harry?

iloveACK · 12/04/2012 22:17

I think it is a lovely name, but it is v popular so as long as you don't mind that, then go for it Grin

OliviaLMumsnet · 12/04/2012 22:21

yellowflowers - nope he is Hen or Henry atm (but that may change when he is older..)

There is another Henry at nursery so in fact he is Henry OliviaMumsnet'sSurname to differentiate from Henry OtherBoyAtNursery...

5inthebed · 12/04/2012 22:24

I have a Harry, he is the only one I know.

YummyMummybee · 12/04/2012 22:32

Prince Harry's official name is Henry!!!!

BeaditAli · 12/04/2012 22:38

I don't think it's on the same level as Alfie and Archie and I'm really glad we didn't care about popularity (DS's name is the one mnetters told me was over-used, oh have some originality, there'll be a million in his class...... But we went with it and loved it ever since)....... If you love it and the face fits..... Use it Grin

I always say this on these threads, but both DP & I have grandfathers called Harry (yes, its on their birth certificate) - one born in the 1920s and one born in the 1880s. So it's been a name in its own right for a while.

Stellan · 13/04/2012 08:01

I liked it until I learnt that Americans pronounce it 'Hairy'. Put me right off then.

RillaBlythe · 13/04/2012 08:29

Yeah, they do. Plebs.

BBQJuly · 13/04/2012 08:45

Harry on its own is a nickname so I'd put it with Alfie/Archie/Charlie etc. Lovely as nickname for Henry though (or even Harrison).

Voidka · 13/04/2012 08:47

We have 3 in our reception class and 2 in our preschool.

Pinkzoo · 13/04/2012 15:28

It's a nice name but I know more little Harry's than any other name. Four in ds preschool alone.

Shriekable · 13/04/2012 17:24

My dad is Henry on birth cert, but has ALWAYS been Harry. I like both. Other than my dad I know a 35 year old called Henry and my friend's 4 year old is Harry. I also know a Harris and a Harrison from DS's school.

cheesenpickle · 13/04/2012 17:35

Ive got a Harry, I love the name and don't care its common/unpopular/orginal or whatever, it really suits my DS. My theory was as its was in the top 10, really near the top that would put loads of people off (as they don't want to be common/unpopular/ unoriginal) and that would mean he wouldn't be 1 of 10 in his class- we will have to see if im right or not ! oh yes ive only had one person ask me if its a nn for Henry.
