Please help me find a classic boys name which will meet my ridiculous list of requirements

I am 12 weeks pregnant and we are thinking of names. We think we have a girl's name sorted- will either be Nina Rose or Eleanor Rose.

We are finding boys names much harder however, due to the following constraints:

1)Our surname is double-barelled and so we think a shorter name would sound best and also save the poor child from getting writing cramp!

2)Our surname begins with 'Sh' so names ending in this eg Josh are a no-go. for this reason we discounted Imogen for a girl.

3)We love classic names- my favourites are Rory (sadly cannot be used as immediate family member called this) and Nicholas which I love but DH has discounted as he thinks the child will get called 'knicker-less' Hmm. We like William but it is sooo popular. Also Oliver but close friend just named baby this.

4)I am not keen on names ending in -ie, eg, Alfie, Freddie though I know they are popular.

5)Not keen on modern names eg Dexter, Jayden/Hayden, Kai etc

  1. Nothing too upper-class sounding (I am thinking of Hugo, Tristan, etc) as although we have a double-barelled surname we live in a not very well-to-do area in the North East!

If anyone has managed to read through my ridiculous list of requirements I would love some help!

Oscar?

Kveta · 11/04/2012 12:41

Oscar
Thomas
Theodore (Theo/Teddy)
Edward
Alexander
Tobias/Toby
Lewis
George
Gregory (Greg for short)

what middle name do you have in mind?

Aworryingtrend · 11/04/2012 12:49

Thank you both. Oscar is one of those names that when someone else calls their baby it I think 'thats a nice name', but I can't imagine calling our son it, IYSWIM? Confused

Thomas and Edward I LOVE and have added to the list. The others probably fall into the same 'nice names but not the one for us' category. Sigh.

Middle name will be Michael, after my brother.

Do you like alliteration - Samuel?

Otherwise:

Richard
Russell
Philip

Kveta · 11/04/2012 12:57

if you like Thomas and Edward, what about David, Charles, Samuel, Christopher, Peter?

Although if your surname starts with an S, then Peter would be PMS, which may be undesirable initials :o

Aworryingtrend · 11/04/2012 12:58

Thank you for all your suggestions. John is out unfortunately as about 6 close family members are called this!

Rupert I'm afraid is a bit too 'posh' sounding for us, that could just be me though. Robert was an ex boyfriend so definitely out! Grin. Not keen on raymond, sorry. Patrick, again, lovely name but just don't see it for us?

Of your list Bike I have added Lawrence which I LOVE - but worry it is too long with our surname which is 4 syllables?

Also considering Nathaniel - but argh again is it too long? Why am I drawn to long names when shorter would be best?!

Quite like Philip and Paul too- you don't think they are too 'older generation'?

X-post there! Gosh excellent point about PMS kveta! Shock Totally had not thought of that.

I really like Russell, but not sure if it would go with a surname starting with 'Sh'? David and Daniel I like but it's my two bosses' names which would feel strange! Leo I also love but we have one in the family.

Matthew I may be warming to, I'm not sure.

I have known about 4 Lawrences all my life, all of whom called Lawrie, except one who is Ronnie.

Nathaniel - love abbreviation Nat, which would be snappy with long surname.

Philip and Paul not too old - they are classic! They are saint's names, neither old or young. Like James but less heavily used.

Henry
Joseph

Jacob

Aworryingtrend · 11/04/2012 13:06

I do love Lawrence . Will have to see what DH thinks. Think the inital P might have to be out now though! James I am very keen on but is it very over-used? Nora I love Henry, that is on the list.

cat I'm not keen on the first 3 but maybe Fergus...wierdly I really like the idea of a name beginnging with F? But not sure if Fergus is it?

Ibby Andrew is an option but not sure I love it. I like Jacob but not the nn Jake, personally.

OP posts:
ibbydibby · 11/04/2012 13:25

DS1 is Jacob, and has never been nn'd Jake (doesn't have a nn at all). We just always called him Jacob. Once old enough to speak up for himself, he made it clear that he did not want to be known as Jake, because of association with the Tweenies (he is 15 now)

nickelhasababy · 11/04/2012 13:27

I don't understand why you don't just go for James if you like it. :)

our choices were James and Eleanor.
we got the Eleanor. :)

xkcdfangirl · 11/04/2012 13:30

We have a double barrelled surname and similarly were cautious about any name that could be seen as too posh. we went for "Robin" after weeks and weeks of rejecting each other's favourites.

lilibet · 11/04/2012 13:41

I know this is no help at all and really not what you want, but I can't help myself -

Nina Rose from the chair and left the room

I think it every time I see Rose as a middle name.

anyhow, on a more useful note - Reuben?

seeker · 11/04/2012 13:44

PATRiCK!!
