Please help me find a classic boys name which will meet my ridiculous list of requirements

I am 12 weeks pregnant and we are thinking of names. We think we have a girl's name sorted- will either be Nina Rose or Eleanor Rose.

We are finding boys names much harder however, due to the following constraints:

1)Our surname is double-barelled and so we think a shorter name would sound best and also save the poor child from getting writing cramp!

2)Our surname begins with 'Sh' so names ending in this eg Josh are a no-go. for this reason we discounted Imogen for a girl.

3)We love classic names- my favourites are Rory (sadly cannot be used as immediate family member called this) and Nicholas which I love but DH has discounted as he thinks the child will get called 'knicker-less' Hmm. We like William but it is sooo popular. Also Oliver but close friend just named baby this.

4)I am not keen on names ending in -ie, eg, Alfie, Freddie though I know they are popular.

5)Not keen on modern names eg Dexter, Jayden/Hayden, Kai etc

  1. Nothing too upper-class sounding (I am thinking of Hugo, Tristan, etc) as although we have a double-barelled surname we live in a not very well-to-do area in the North East!

If anyone has managed to read through my ridiculous list of requirements I would love some help!

Has anyone suggested Adam or Luke? Personally I love both but others might find them a bit dated. The same goes for Marcus, which I also love.

Ah didn't read the second page, they have already been suggested!

Rhuraidh (pronounced Roo-ry) - maybe too similar to Rory if it's a close family member, or perhaps too celtic?

If you like William then howabout Will? Sure, Williams might be shortened to Will, but there are virtually no Wills around at all. There is only one in our entire school.

CupOfBrownJoy · 11/04/2012 19:21

Daniel?

Danny is cute for a child, and Dan is nice for an adult...

If you like Rory, then how about Ewan? I know someone who has used both and I have used one and considered the other!

And if Nathaniel is too long, how about Nathan?

Btw, my brother is called Nicholas and to the best of my knowledge, has never ever been called Knicker-less (and he's 38!)
