Is this pregnancy hormones? Woody

I was in our local park last week and I heard a mum shout Woody to her son. I really like it but I'm not sure if this is me going a bit crazy. I am also not sure if he would be teased as a teenager with Woody have you got wood!

What are your thoughts? Our other name is Bert/Bertie.

Zoe Ball has a Woody. I quite like it. I wouldn't worry about nicknames. Children can be nasty little blighters in the playground and will find ways to pick on some kids regardless of their name. He may even be quite proud of the wood association as a teenager...?

scottishmummy · 05/04/2012 14:13

woody isn't that slang for an erection?
hate woody
it's a name forvquinoa munching trying to hard parents.oh in fact a media Luvvie like Zoe ball

Beans1977 · 05/04/2012 14:13

I like Woody too. Maybe you could give a longer name like Edward and use Woody as a nn if you are unsure?

Bert/Bertie is also lovely though. I marginally prefer that one, but I think both names are a bit quirky and original.

WildRumpus · 05/04/2012 14:15

Good to be aware of the effect crazy pregnancy hormones can have on your name preferences though. I really, really, really liked the name Delilah during 2nd pregnancy. Poor DH was having a hard job convincing me not to consign our child to a lifetime of bad Tom Jones imitations. Probably for the best that baby turned out to be a boy. This time round I have allowed DH to choose name.

KatAndKit · 05/04/2012 14:15

Definitely not Woody as his real name! Unless you plan on producing the entire cast of Toy Story and the next one will be called Buzz....

If you like it as a nickname that's fair enough but it's not fair to saddle a child with Woody as their actual legal name.

scottishmummy · 05/04/2012 14:18

yep it's slang for a hard on don't go there. ever

RetroMum1 · 05/04/2012 14:21

WildRumpus my DS's best friend is called Delilah and no one has ever bat an eye at her name or even mentioned it, it really suits her. Maybe you could use it for this one!

Thanks for all the honest comments, that was my concern. It is really cool nickname and cute for littl man but does a 30 year old man want to have shouted across the pub "Woody what do you want to drink?"! we are in SE London so there re a lot of different names in use but I wasn't sure if is was a bit far out.

WildRumpus · 05/04/2012 14:30

Hmmm might put Delilah back in the mix...

. Don't see the problem with wood / hard-on link. Nobody's fussed if they meet someone called Dick are they? And William has never gone out of fashion because it shortens to Willy...?

IAmYourSingingTelegram · 05/04/2012 14:31

It's the hormones. It's awful.

Justfeckingdoit · 05/04/2012 14:33

Back away from Woody. Fine as a nn, but no way a first name.

Those hormones are buggers.

RetroMum1 · 05/04/2012 14:34

I love your thinking!

I am also of the belief that kids are cruel and will find something to tease other kids with whether it be for glasses, being ginger, short, tall, skinny, fat the list in endless.

using that logic then fanny is a lovely name too
hey just because it's vulgar slang for genitals doesn't mean you can't use it...

RetroMum1 · 05/04/2012 14:37

I had a great aunt Fanny maybe I'll use that for a girl Scottishmummy Grin

scottishmummy · 05/04/2012 14:44

middle name Annie
yes fanny Annie, that's a good name

eirikthered · 05/04/2012 14:44

Never pick a name you couldn't imagine on a 50 year old. Your child won't be a cute little baby forever, nor will they necessarily grow up to be a rock star - they could grow to be an accountant. Pick a name that means people will take them seriously. I'm speaking as someone whose DP narrowly avoided a 'Moon Unit Zappa'-esque name.

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 05/04/2012 14:48

There's one in our local nursery and I think it's pretty bad as a real first name, no where for the child to go with it

WildRumpus · 05/04/2012 15:20

I'm guessing Woody Harrelson is about 50 by now?

eirikthered · 05/04/2012 15:24

Woody Harrelson is precisely 50 years old. He's also American and a film star, and therefore it's practically obligatory for him to have a silly name. Besides, his actual name is Woodrow Tracy Harrelson, which I think you'll agree is no better.

daffodilyellow · 05/04/2012 15:53

I love it!

nizlopi · 05/04/2012 16:15

My son's surname is Wood and he's already started getting this as a nickname at school, as did his father, uncle and grandpa :)

So, as long as there are no kids with 'Wood' as a surname in his class, he'll be ok!

Momdeguerre · 05/04/2012 17:05

I don't like Woody as a stand alone name but I think it can be a cool abbreviation of names like Edward and that also gives the flexibility of Ed, Ted, Ned etc

noddyholder · 05/04/2012 17:09

Its a great name! My grandad was called Bertie and I just love it too.

mathanxiety · 05/04/2012 20:31

The teenage teasing would be the number one reason to avoid it.

mumatron · 05/04/2012 20:38

We have a Woody in our family (Woodrow) never heard a bad comment about his name.

There's a Delilah in the family too.

There's a few other names that would be considered 'odd' on here. Weird seems to be the norm for us.

And none of us are quinoa munching media types either Hmm

Rowood · 05/04/2012 20:41

Love woody! Also Bertie! I do have a ronnie, tommo and a Minnie though Grin
