I was in our local park last week and I heard a mum shout Woody to her son. I really like it but I'm not sure if this is me going a bit crazy. I am also not sure if he would be teased as a teenager with Woody have you got wood!

What are your thoughts? Our other name is Bert/Bertie.

Woodrow, one of my favourite hypothetical names.

Woody is sometimes a nn for Edward I believe.

woodpecker.
sorry but that's the first thing that comes to mind.

happybigbump · 05/04/2012 21:49

Just don't have a Woody and a Willy Grin.

Sorry, but I'm not keen.

I know a Woody irl and have never heard anyone say anything negative about it. I think it's really cool.

If you are not 100% sure about it as a first name, it could be a nn for Edward.

Thanks WantAnOrange, DH and DD are set on Woody and seem to have written off Bertie.

It is interesting reading the "Do kids bully over names" thread as well.

I think you should name your child whatever your heart tells you. Yes there is something kids could use to tease but it would be short-lived. Pp says kids will always find something and I'd rather be teased for my name than called fat, spotty, specky etc etc which is much more cruel. I think woody is a cool name - teenage boys tend to end up with some kind of nn along the same lines (greeny, wilko etc) and he'd already have one

Good = Guthrie

Bad = Toy story

My friend called her little boy Woody (as a nn for a longer, completely unrelated name). As first I (and everyone else I think) were unsure, but roll on a few years it is now just his name and no-one bats an eyelid.

I would probably go with a longer, more traditional name as a back up though.
