Hugo

A few months ago, I put our favourite boys names on here inc Hugo, Tobias, Oscar, Edward, Miles, and Hugo took the lead in your votes...I love the name Hugo. However there were a number of you who criticised the name saying it was pretentious and the like. If we had a Hugo, he wouldn't be born with a silver spoon in his mouth and wouldn't get a private education as some of you had an expectation associated with the name. However, I still love it...so does it matter? Fed up with going around in circles with this name and would appreciate your final verdict on the name. I have 5 weeks to go and need to get a name sorted. Many thanks.

I love Hugo, it's on my list :)

If you love it then use it, you don't need anyone elses permission.

Psammead · 01/04/2012 14:33

I like all of your list. Hugo is very nice. I think all of the names are traditionally posher than some, but that means diddly-squat. If you like it, use it. People wont be laughing behind your back if that's what you are concerned about.

DottieRose · 01/04/2012 14:33

Hugo is a fab name.....go for it!! You will never please everyone anyway

IAmYourSingingTelegram · 01/04/2012 14:56

Go with it.It's a great name.

PatriciaHolm · 01/04/2012 15:18

We have one do clearly we're fansSmile

sonniebonnie · 01/04/2012 18:14

I think very few names are regarded as 'posh' these days. I know several Hugos, Sebastians and Quentins who are not 'posh' at all - seems like people are becoming a little more open-minded about names.

And the really posh people don't even use 'posh' names anymore - they go for John or Elizabeth.

LittleOne76 · 01/04/2012 22:54

We have a little Hugo! We're from overseas so don't have the same posh associations with the name.. Didn't even realise there were those associations. Anyway, he's a character with a big personality And I cannot imagine him with the other names on our list. If you love it then go with gut feeling and go for it.

SoFarWeAreEqual · 02/04/2012 20:17

I love Hugo. I think I was one of those who championed it in your original thread. Go for it if you love it - you will regret it otherwise!

DoubleGlazing · 02/04/2012 20:31

I like Edward and Miles best from your list.

OriginalJamie · 02/04/2012 20:50

I also prefer Edward and Miles. Or Hugh/Huw

Rhubarbgarden · 02/04/2012 21:20

I like Hugo. I really wouldn't worry about some people thinking it's a bit posh.

tigrou · 03/04/2012 10:33

It's the boy who'll wear it who'll make the name. If he's not posh, his name won't be. I know three Hugos - one adorable, one nice, and one a terror. None of them posh. I love the name.

sonniebonnie · 03/04/2012 10:35

Anyway, how can a name be posh? A person might be but not a name.

squoosh · 03/04/2012 10:44

It's my least favourite name out of your list however if you love it than you have to use it. Posh people don't own names and you are unlikely to be visited by a deputation from Chelsea commanding you not use 'their name'.

nearlymumofone · 03/04/2012 13:34

I named my DS Hugh and worried that it would be seen as too 'posh'. But I've only had one (ignorant) comment to this affect. Everyone else has loved it, I love it too and glad I went with it. Moral of the story- if you love it, go with it. You will regret picking some blander name as a compromise otherwise.

squoosh · 03/04/2012 13:39

It's funny, I don't see Hugh as posh at all. I think Hugo has a different image though.

Beans1977 · 03/04/2012 14:30

I love Hugo - it's cute for a young boy but also works well as a strong, male adult name. Go for it!

Janoschi · 03/04/2012 15:06

Hugo Robert Jones = not posh
Hugo St-John Horatio Blackett-Smythe = quite posh!

Lovely name though and he can always use Hugh later if it's a real issue so really don't worry - you must pick the name you love, not the one you think others might prefer. I compromised a bit with DD and even though I now like her name a lot, I wish I'd not let other people's opinions get in the way so much.

I find people stick their oar in while you're pregnant but once the baby is out, they usually fall into line with a 'ooh how nice' style remark.

Boggler · 03/04/2012 15:11

I love the name Hugo and it's by far the best on your list. I wanted hugo for ds but dh didn't agreeSad don't pick Oscar there are 100's about very very common. X

deste · 03/04/2012 18:35

Hugo all the way.

unimaginativename · 03/04/2012 18:39

I think Hugo is lovely, it was our name for DD had she been a boy. We got a lot of stick for it though, we're from (lower) middle class families and they though it was pretentious, we were told he'd be bullied mercilessly if he went to a state school. I love Edward too. If you like Hugo then go for it, never mind what other small minded people say.

rocket74 · 03/04/2012 22:03

Hugo is currently top of my list for DC if its a boy! It hasn't even crossed my mind that its too posh - we do live in a city where anything goes though.

We already have an Edgar and I think the two names work well together too!

Go for it!

qwerty123 · 09/04/2012 22:45

Thanks for your messages everyone. Feeling more like Hugo could become a reality now. Giving someone a name can be such a difficult decision!

I love it too, it was on our list as a middle name but baby turned out to be DD Smile.

Still on the list for next time though!

MrsLetchlady · 11/04/2012 00:22

Hugo is a fab name.

There's a litle Hugo in my DDs class (standard state school, so not at all posh).

I think its one of those names that used to be considered posh, but is now used by many. The poshness of it wouldn't have concerned me any more.
