Hit me with Welsh boys names

Really struggling to find a Welsh boy's name that we like, I've been through them all just about, and while I like some, they all have drawbacks. DS has got the one boy's name we liked and works for our wider family (pronunciation and so on).

Be grateful for suggestions other than what's in the Heini Gruffudd welsh names for children book.

Diolch / thanks

I wanted Iolo, Ianto or Idris but all vetoed by (english) DH, we went with Gruffydd. Otherwise family members are
Geraint
Eifion
Gwynfor
Llewellyn
Dewi

doctordwt · 30/03/2012 21:28

Gwaun?

CupOfBrownJoy · 30/03/2012 21:28

Funnily enough soon to be DH is Andreas and he HATES it. So much so that his nickname is actually going on the wedding invites.

Every other man is called Andreas here....

madaboutmadmen · 30/03/2012 21:29

Slightly less common in Wales Grin but if you're in Germany, it's a difficult one! Elias?Grin

Gwaun? Didn't realise that was a person's name Blush

I've known only one so don't know if it was a bit of a hippy effort but I don't think so - look in the Heini book? (I don't have it anymore). Means heath?

madaboutmadmen · 30/03/2012 21:33

yes just looked, means Gwaun Cae Gurwen to me Grin

Just adding Cynan to the other lovely names listed above.

Also Meirwyn, Eirwyn, Rhun, Dyfan and Siencyn.

doctordwt · 30/03/2012 21:39

Haha yes! Funnily enough Heath is one of my absolute faves in English, love the sound of Gwaun too. As long as the initials don't end up as GCG

madaboutmadmen · 30/03/2012 21:42

Well done ItsNotUnusual for the slightly more unusual ones!

Also like Seimon but of course it'd be lost to Simon in England.

If Hedd as a mn, you need a couple of syllables before it.

Ieuan Hedd
Caradog Hedd
Talfryn Hedd
Macsen Hedd (I'd go for this if you like it, lovely name and works in England)
Cynan Hedd (though I feel I must tell you that my iPhone just tried to autocorrect that to Cuban Heel Grin )

madaboutmadmen · 30/03/2012 21:51

GrinGrinGrin cuban heel.

Thinking Aneirin Hedd. Macsen as another possibility

Laughing at the German problem. I had the exact same issue - and my DH is a bloody Andreas too and hates it-.

It frustrated the hell out of me that DH couldn't pronounce any of my favourite Welsh names - during the more hormonal moments of pregnancy I was sure he was messing up just to annoy me.

So we picked a name with no Welsh connection at all and I'm still a bit sad. I wanted Tangwen or Bran (f/m) for the record - how hard are THEY to say, hmm?

Re tricky names (having got one), I'd say no worries if short. But don't foist a 9 letter name on him or he'll get so fed up spelling it.

Bert2e · 30/03/2012 22:08

Great thread - I've just discovered you can hear Welsh name pronunciations on the BBC website and that Hedd is "Hayeth"! I'd go for Idris or Iolo personally but as we aren't Welsh / don't live in Wales and aren't haveing any more babies that's out of the question!

BestIsWest · 30/03/2012 22:14

Please go with Aneirin! I so wish we'd called DS this. I love Hedd too.

TBF1 · 30/03/2012 22:19

Llewellyn... "Mighty leader" I love it!

Cian... "Little black bird" Perfect for a baby with a mop of black hair :)

Just tested Hedd on my english DH... totally wasted on him!

What about Hefin or Sior?

Reesie · 31/03/2012 18:12

I had the same dilemma. I have 2 dd's with names I chose and loved immediately. When I found out I was expecting a DS, I spent ages dithering about what to name him. I was also aware of popular boys names in DD's school.

Very popular names are -
Rhys
Gethyn
Osian
Owain
Gruff
Harri

My shortlist was -
Hedd (love, love, love it)
Sior
Llew (nn llewellyn)

DS was finally called Guto and I love it but am aware it is a marmite name outside wales. I knew 2 Guto's as a child and they were very tall, gorgeous sporty types unfortunately only managed to snog one of them

Bluestocking · 31/03/2012 18:15

I love Gwyndaf, but not being Welsh, I have no idea what the connotations are - it may well be a real old gimmer's name!

MagsAloof · 31/03/2012 19:08

Love Aneurin. One of the nicest boy's names I have ever heard.

madaboutmadmen · 31/03/2012 19:26

thanks all, looking like Aneirin but we've got ages yet....hope no else nicks it in the mean time Grin

Love Aneirin.

My Dh's middle name is Yorath and I have a friend called Bryn.

Doilooklikeatourist · 31/03/2012 19:51

I will suggest
Iolo
Celt
Siencyn
Meurig

I love Celt , imagining a little chubby rufty tufty toddler running around ( probably blonde and chubby ... ) sorry got a bit carried away !

Janoschi · 31/03/2012 21:15

Reesie, Guto is fab!
