Very similar names, but which one should I choose?
I'm from Liverpool and people have a habit of shortening names, which has relegated my favourite choice, Augusta, to being a middle name because I don't want my daughter to be known as Aggie. I could live with her being called Delphi, though.
If you lovely women could help me decide which one to pick, I'd be really grateful (don't really want to discuss name with family or friends if I can help it).

Delphine of course. Very nice name.

janx · 30/03/2012 11:13

I think Delphine is nicer

pickledsiblings · 30/03/2012 11:14

Delphina? Goes nicely with Augusta Smile.

Stellan · 30/03/2012 11:14

Delphine - definitely. I knew a girl by this name (she was French) and always thought it was lovely.

The other sounds like a genus of plant or a new chemical element or something. It sounds pretty, yes, but also clinical.

Thank you for your quick answers Thanks .
Delphine, then! It goes better with Augusta, now I come to think about it.

Defo Delphine :)

DoubleGlazing · 30/03/2012 14:16

Delphinium

wannaBe · 30/03/2012 14:18

neither - they're both horrible.

margoandjerry · 30/03/2012 14:23

Delphine - lovely and a proper name. Delphinium puts me in mind of those batty English ladies with random flower names - like Chris Patten's wife - Lavender which I bet she's hated all her life.

AThingInYourLife · 30/03/2012 14:24

Delphine

seeker · 30/03/2012 14:25

Are you absolutely sure? Really?

bamboobutton · 30/03/2012 14:26

i think delphinium is a bit of a mouthful and prob one of those name that your dd would be forever spelling out.

delphine is a lovely name.

Showmethemhappyfeet · 30/03/2012 17:09

Not my kind of name but of the 2, Delphine definitely. I'm also from Liverpool and the other one is just 'too much' unless your really really posh and want everyone to know it.

EdithWeston · 30/03/2012 17:14

Delphine - lovely name.

Delphinium - random flower.

mumbaisapphire · 30/03/2012 18:19

My mum grows Delphinium's in her garden.

If Delphinium wasn't a flower, it would be the name of an accounting software package or similar.

Delphine, therefore, is the much better choice.

Iamweasel · 30/03/2012 18:27

My DD was going to be delphine until all 10 lbs of her was born and she looked nothing at all like a delphine

Conicidentally if she had been a boy she would've been Augustine

We must have very similar tastes Smile

Showmethemhappyfeet · 30/03/2012 18:28

Is Delphie as a nn a bit close to Adeplhi though?

UnnamedFemaleProtagonist · 30/03/2012 18:30

Delphine Donkey is Peppa Pigs French penpal. IIRC

LaDiDaDi · 30/03/2012 18:30

Delphine

lifeisfuckinggreat · 30/03/2012 18:35

Delphine, beautiful French name

JustHecate · 30/03/2012 18:36

Delphine is the better choice of the two, imo.

Petrean · 30/03/2012 18:44

Neither... Are you sure people will shorten it to Delphi and not just Del?

tunaday · 30/03/2012 19:24

Prefer Delphine. Sounds v French. Delphinium sounds a bit of a mouthful. When she gets older wouldn't be surprised if her friends call her Del.

UntamedShrew · 30/03/2012 19:35

I'm truly sorry, I hate to sound mean about such a personal choice and I do love the name Delphine - but if you're in Liverpool isn't the Adelphi hotel quite a local landmark & 'our Delphie' might not thank you for it?
If you love it still then go for it (my DS has a really potentially embarrassing name but we all love it) but just wanted to make sure you'd thought of this!

spiffysquiffyspiggy · 30/03/2012 19:50

I'm from Liverpool and knew a mother and daughter called Delphine. Never thought of a link with the Adelphi. The daughter got the full version of her name and the mum was called Del. Delphinium is definitely a bit of a mouthful.
