Very similar names, but which one should I choose?
I'm from Liverpool and people have a habit of shortening names, which has relegated my favourite choice, Augusta, to being a middle name because I don't want my daughter to be known as Aggie. I could live with her being called Delphi, though.
If you lovely women could help me decide which one to pick, I'd be really grateful (don't really want to discuss name with family or friends if I can help it).

Hmm, the Adelphi thing has just put me off a little but probably not enough to change the name, at least fo now. I definitely wouldn't let her be called Del.

i would also seriously consider how well known 'delphine donkey' is in peppa pig given its popularity

Im also liverpool and would consider the adelphi shortening/ skit is a very real possibility :(

I like Aggie on its own though :)

seeker · 30/03/2012 20:17

You honestly can't stop people shortening names. And you can't control nicknames. She will be Del.

Strawbezza · 30/03/2012 20:19

She'll get called Dolphin.

BeaditAli · 30/03/2012 20:24

Delphina could be Della Smile

PestoPenguin · 30/03/2012 20:25

When you mentioned Liverpool the first thing I thought of was the Adelphi, sorry.

SoozyWoozy · 30/03/2012 20:49

Delphine is also the donkey in Peppa Pig for me too, and probably thousands of other mums / children.

I like Augusta better than Delphine, and surely it would only be Aggie if you allowed it? My DD3 is Eloise, and I have quickly corrected people who have tried to call her Ellie. Even funnier when people assume her nn is Ellie, call her it and she doesn't realise they are talking to her :o

fannybaws · 30/03/2012 20:53

I know a lovely delphine and her nn is Delly, go for it.

CuffingChunt · 30/03/2012 20:57

UnamedFemale Peppa pig's Fench Pen friend is the first thing that sprang to my mind too.
That said DS is named George so who am I to comment Grin

CaoNiMa · 31/03/2012 05:30

If Augusta is your first choice, for heaven's sake use it! You can TELL people not to call her Aggie, you know.

"Her name is Augusta" should suffice. If people need telling more than once, they are being rude and unreasonable.

nooka · 31/03/2012 05:46

Aggie doesn't seem a very natural nn for Augusta. Wouldn't Gus/Gussie be more likely? I knew a Delphine who was always Delphine, you can never quite tell how nns turn out.

ItWasThePenguins · 31/03/2012 06:31

Love Delphine.

Really dislike other one.

doctordwt · 31/03/2012 11:59

You will not be able to stop people calling her Del!

You will not be able to stop people calling her Aggie either - fwiw I like it, quite cool!

She may CHOOSE to call herself Del, Della, Aggie, Gus etc.

If you hate an obvious nickname, don't give the name. The only time you get to control the naming is now - when you choose the name! Once it's out there - that's it.

I would absolutely not call a child Delphine if you're in Liverpool - it too obviously references the hotel. And yes, she's just as likely to be Our Delph, Our Delphie, Our Del.

How do you feel about starting over?! If you think people will definitely shorten, how about starting from short forms you like, and working back to a full name?

  • Annie (Anna, Annelise, Annika, Angela, Annabel)
  • Izzy (Isobel, Imogen, Isadora)
etc.
MagsAloof · 31/03/2012 12:59

Delphine is lovely - makes me think of chic, French women.

Delphinium is awful - clunky and just horrid, sorry.

Delphi is gorgeous.

DoubleGlazing · 31/03/2012 13:00

Adele, Adela and Delilah are nice names with the "del" sound. I think Adele is short enough not to get "Del" as nickname, and Adela/Delilah could have Della as nickname instead.

doctordwt · 31/03/2012 13:52

I know about three Adeles who are ALL Del!

All 40s-50s though.

DoubleGlazing · 31/03/2012 14:09

There goes my theory then :o Oh well :)

Tricksterfrickster · 31/03/2012 20:09

I wouldn't worry about the Peppa connection, as there are lots of George and Suzies who probably manage fine, I think their friends would think they were quite cool having a Peppa name (well my DD is 2 and would like to be called Peppa!)
Delphine is lovely.
