What do you think of Louis as a boy's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

I love Lewis, but bit meh about Louis, because of the Louis XIV pronunciation issue.

lemniscate · 18/03/2012 13:10

As long as you pronounce it Looie, i love it! If you want Loois then spell it Lewis (I also like this but hate it when people pronounce Louis as Lewis - Louis is the French way, use Lewis of you want the English)

No idea why I get my knickers in a twist about this as I don't have any Louis/Lewis in my family!

usualsuspect · 18/03/2012 13:11

I love it, pronounced Lou -is though

CurlyhairedAssassin · 18/03/2012 13:12

DS's best friend is called Louis (prounounced the french way, as it should be) and I love it. It really suits him.

I agree with lemniscate about choosing Lewis instead if you want it pronounced the English way.

usualsuspect · 18/03/2012 13:13

Its lou -is

The End

Helohapp · 18/03/2012 13:16

I think we were going to go with the Lou-ie pronunciation.

Love it! Wanted it husband didn't like!

BarbieDahl · 18/03/2012 13:39

Love it, it was on my list for a boy, but then we had 2 girls

babyblabber · 18/03/2012 14:10

i like it. why would anyone pronounce it like lewis? it's a totally different (and much nicer!) name!

sonniebonnie · 18/03/2012 14:36

Only in French would Louis be pronounced without the 's'. That is because the French often drop the last 's' in words.

In German, Spanish and English you would pronounce the 's' as in Lou-is. It is a fairly popular name in Germany currently and is ALWAYS pronounced with an 's' at the end.

It seems to me that some 'posh' English speakers prefer to sound French by pronouncing it without the s. But that is just my opinion and I know that many may disagree withe me Smile.

mayanna123 · 18/03/2012 14:40

The (non French) Louis I know calls himself Lou-is. I agree that that would be the natural English phonetic pronunciation.

But that is the problem with foreign names (in this case French) - you can either pronounce them the French way or the English/German/Spanish or another way. And you can certainly not expect a non French speaker to pronounce it the French way (without being told).

Catsmamma · 18/03/2012 14:42

Nah, has to be Lou-ie ....very NooYoik! :D :D

mayanna123 · 18/03/2012 14:45

But actually it would make sense to 'Englify' the name to Louie rather than to use the original French spelling. Just like Pierre became Peter and Matthieu became Matthew etc. I think the Spanish changed it to Luis.

DustyDen · 18/03/2012 15:43

Hate it. It's like "toilet-y". Loo-ey. (Irrational pet hate...)

Bucharest · 18/03/2012 16:03

Dislike it intensely.

Dislike Lewis intensely as well.

(but agree they are two different names with two different pronunciations)

blackcoffee · 18/03/2012 16:04

it's cool (Lou -ee)

nizlopi · 18/03/2012 16:09

I love it, but would never use it as I LOATHE Louis Walsh with the fire of a thousand burning suns.

mayanna123 · 18/03/2012 17:28

Actually I had never made the loo association but yes, the French way does sound like Loo-y Grin

anglonubian · 18/03/2012 18:56

I love it and may well be naming my son it. I've only ever known it to be pronounced Lou-ee. Lewis is a different name, it's a surname isn't it?!

I found out the other day that Louis Walsh's real name is in fact Michael!

chocolateshoes · 18/03/2012 19:03

i love Louis (poronounced French). But my friend has a son and he complains that some people always pronounce it the wrong way and every year he has a new teacher he has to explain. Mind you he is 17 now and I think you hear it a lot more so there should be less confusion. I teach a lot of Lewis and also Louis (both pronounciations).

CherryBlossom27 · 18/03/2012 19:09

I love this name :)

Agree that it should be pronounced Loo-ee, otherwise I'd spell it as Lewis as in Loo-is.

DH chose Lewis for DS's name which I was really happy with and thought of Lennox Lewis :)

evamummy · 18/03/2012 19:46

I don't like Louis, I'm afraid. I too hear 'loo' in the name.

The Louis I know goes by Lou-is, the English way, although the French pronunciation (Lou-ee) seems to be becoming more 'trendy' it appears, perhaps due to Lou-ee Walsh (whom I don't like either, I'm afraid).

Spelling it Louie would be a more helpful English spelling if you didn't like the s.

rachel234 · 18/03/2012 22:13

I like it pronounced Lou-is. It is my (German) nephew's name.

I'm less keen on the French pronunciation.

allagory · 18/03/2012 22:19

I love it.. But I think Louis Pasteur..Louis Armstrong..Louis Theroux before you think Louis walsh

TinkerMaloo · 19/03/2012 09:05

love it lots! :) it was going to be my boy name, but we already have a marianne and we arent french so we decided against it :(
