Girls names - what the feeling about Beattie for a girl:

Ok, you are all probably getting sick of my name threads, but still can't decide. Had decided on Posy, but my mum has made me worried that it sounds like a "poseur".

My mum suggested Beattie (which is derived from Beatrice, but because of Herbie, we couldn't call her beatrice if he isn't called Herbert). Do anyone have strong feelings against this name, anyone like it.

For those who don't already know my other children are called Herbie and Ivy. Ideally i would like a name that has the eeee sound on the end, to tie in with Herbie and Ivy. Soooo what do you think of Beattie.

It doesn't do it for me, sorry. Firstly because I know it as a surname, so it just doesn't quite feel right as a first name; and secondly because it still evokes a strong memory of Maureen Lipman in the BT (geddit?) adverts.

TheSurgeonsMate · 02/03/2012 11:47

I like it. Equally, I don't think Posy sounds like "poseur".

HolyNoSheDittantBatman · 02/03/2012 11:47

I don't like it.

Also, I don't think you have to match your children's names. So if you like Beatrice, but not Herbert then have Herbie and Beatrice.

squoosh · 02/03/2012 11:48

Yes I think of the BT ads too.

It's a short, squat, tweed wearing old lady name.

Sorry.

LittlePandaBear · 02/03/2012 11:50

Makes me think of Beat-y, like beating. Sorry! There are so many prettier names out there!

tethersend · 02/03/2012 11:52

I like it.

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 02/03/2012 11:55

what about a straight Betty instead? I too have the british telecom thoughts about Beattie

Bigteadrinker · 02/03/2012 12:44

Actually i'm the opposite too you, i want my kids to have very distinct, different sounding names, that i cant get them mixed up! Also they are separate people even though they are siblings! I like Beatrice or Bea, but Beattie less so, but its not awful and i wouldnt have immediately thought if the ad.

TheCrunchUnderfoot · 02/03/2012 12:48

Love Beatrice and it's fine as a nn for that - but if stand-alone, I MUCH prefer Posy... which I think fits better with your other names. Beattie and Herbie are too matchy.

Posy as a stand-alone is really lovely actually!

Bigteadrinker · 02/03/2012 12:48

Also, hate to say, but I would snigger if I heard you calling out Posy in the playground. I can imagine adults called Beatrice and Herbie, not Posy. Sorry.

Hedwig3 · 02/03/2012 13:04

I like it, I did think BT but that doesn't really put me off.

TheSurgeonsMate · 02/03/2012 13:37

Posy Simmonds is a great example of an adult called Posy.

FilterCoffee · 02/03/2012 13:39

It's a bit beetrooty (beety).

welovesausagedogs · 02/03/2012 13:45

TheSurgeonMate, thanks for that, yes she really is a good example of a normal adult called Posy and i don't think it sounds silly. I just had a look at some interviews with her on youtube and when her name is said it doesn't sound babyish. Maybe we should stick with what we liked first of all, and maybe use beatrice as a middle name.

googietheegg · 02/03/2012 17:01

Posy is a wonderful name!

EdithWeston · 02/03/2012 17:06

Posy Simmonds real name is Rosemary.

I think Posy is a fab nn for Josephine.

freerangeeggs · 02/03/2012 17:10

I don't like Beattie much. It makes me think 'beat off' (dirty mind)

Betty on the other hand is LOVELY with Herbie and Ivy (which are fantastic btw). Beatrice is a really, really nice name too and I think it's fine with Herbie.

Posy is cute but I think it's a name that you either suit or you don't.

welovesausagedogs · 02/03/2012 17:16

I think in order to suit the name posy, our little girl will have to be quite delicate looking which i think is likely as Ivy looks like a little doll. I think we will stick with Posy unless baby no.3 absolutely does not suit it. But as one person said to me once a child is called a certain name, you can't imagine them being called anything else and the child takes it on however strange it is.

"Beattie" sounds like "Betty" pronounced by a New Zealander.

welovesausagedogs · 04/03/2012 09:28

Just to let you all know i went into labour on friday evening (earlier than expected), but baby no.3 arrived safely with a c-section, and is alright but is still tiny so is in intensive care, still haven't decided on a name as she doesn't look like a posy.

Congratulations, how early is she?

Do let us know her name.

wafflingworrier · 04/03/2012 09:49

congratulations on a safe delivery!

DressTuckedInMeKnickers · 04/03/2012 09:49

PS what about Rosie, Phoebe or Molly?

FilterCoffee · 04/03/2012 10:21

Congratulations! Look forward to hearing the name you choose.

How about Bethany, Lucy, Emily, Daisy, Coralie, Josephine (Josie), Sophie, Elodie?

gentlydownthestream · 04/03/2012 10:55

Congratulatios! Can I suggest the name Genevieve? It's stunning and there are plenty of 'ee' nicknames for it (eg Evie) or other nicknames like Genna.
Good luck choosing a name, I'm sure whatever you pick will be lovely :)
