Final, final 4 DD2 names. What do you think?

I think we are finally there (after other seemingly final lists!). Interested in comments, especially regarding nn-should we just go for that as a shorter name (which is the aim with our long surname) or have a "grown up" name too?

Not sure about a middle name for the last 2, so again any ideas appreciated!

Miranda Rose (Mimi)-I love Mimi, should her name be just that? Or the longer version-but don't like Mandy as a nn! DH would "go along" with this one!

Lucinda Faye/Violet (Lucy)-DH choice, I think it's a bit safe?

Scarlett (Letty)- We both like it, but is it too popular? Do I care?!

Dulcie - I love it, DH not really keen (but he picked DD1 so I could push for this!)

Thank you so much for looking- I'm going round in circles and want a few different views.

Sorry, I don't like any of those except Miranda, NOT 'Mimi'.

expatinscotland · 27/02/2012 11:35

Why name them something if you want them called something else? That's a recipe for annoyance the rest of their lives, and Letty is usually short for Laetitia, not Scarlett.

Blx2thelotofem · 27/02/2012 11:41

Miranda or Scarlett.

sparkle12mar08 · 27/02/2012 11:43

Out of the list I prefer Dulcie, but my favourite of all is Faye - it's beautiful.

GreenDragonfly · 27/02/2012 11:50

I like Scarlett and Mimi.

Anonymumous · 27/02/2012 12:29

I have to disagree with expatinscotland. The two things I have always hated most about my name are 1) that it is very, very boring and 2) that it has no nickname potential whatsoever so I am just stuck with it, like it or not. As a consequence, I always give my own children names with at least three different nickname possibilities - just so they can choose their own variation later in life if their taste ends up not coinciding with my own!

I like all the options listed by the OP. I've never heard of Mandy as a nickname for Miranda - I'd be more worried about her being called 'Randy' TBH! I think I like Miranda Rose or Lucinda Faye best (but Rose is a bit of a common, uninspiring middle name these days).

MordechaiVanunu · 27/02/2012 12:39

Miranda is beautiful but Mimi is awful. I always want to say it in a high pitched voice going 'mimimimimimi'. It's a noise to me not a name and a noise that suggests annoying wimpish wetness. (you did want opinions didn't you?)

Lucinda and Lucy both lovely, but why use Lucinda ansnthen call her Lucy? Just use Lucy it's a lovely complete name in it's own right, or use Lucinda also lovely and wasted if your just going to use Lucy.

Scarlett is nice enough but a bit trendy will date, and Letty is again wet and a bit pointless when Scarlett is so much better.

Dulcie is Ok but I predict it'll be one of the new upcoming name that at the moment everyone thinks they are uniquely discovering. (like scarlett was 5years ago).

Miranda is my favourite.

FilterCoffee · 27/02/2012 12:39

Miranda or Lucy.

TheCrunchUnderfoot · 27/02/2012 12:52

Dulcie by far

HolyNoSheDittantBatman · 27/02/2012 13:03

Miranda - not to my taste, but fine.
Mimi - ok as a nickname. Awful, awful, awful as a given name.
Lucinda/Lucy - not to my taste, but fine, bit safe maybe.
Scarlett - lovely, but 'Letty' as a nickname is awful
Dulcie - is a shoe shop for me, much prefer Darcie/Darcy

I agree with anon about the nickname thing. My name is too short for a nn and I always wanted one, so will pick names with a few possible nicknames so they have a choice when they're old enough.

My choice would be; Scarlett Rose or Lucinda Faye

mumbaisapphire · 27/02/2012 13:42

Miranda Rose - I like Mimi as a nn, but really think Miranda (or Mia?) needs to be the full name. I doubt you'll get Mandy as a nn, and you can always nip it in the bud by announcing her name and nn at birth to direct people.

Lucinda Faye/Violet - Lucinda is nice, but as others have said Lucy is a name in its own right, so if you've no intention of ever using Lucinda, just stick to Lucy. I prefer Violet as the middle name.

Scarlett - love this just on its own. Letty, to my ear, is just a bit of a naff nn tbh. Sorry.

Dulcie - not keen. Just reminds me of Dulce du leche, which is very delicious, but I wouldn't name a child after a thick caramel spready thing. I know you're not, but it just reminds me of that.

HoldTouchEngage · 27/02/2012 14:31

Miranda - timeless and classic not at all popular

Lucinda - i love, but have to say i have an aversion to Lucy for some reason!

If you want to call her by the shortened version then do so. I can't see the point of people naming their kids one thing then calling them another all of the time. My DD is called Abby - OH and I didn't like Abigail so just called her the shortened version (which we sometimes even shorten to Abs!). People seem to make a big thing about letting their kids decide their name later in life but I don't understand it. I don't know a single person that goes by anything other than what they were called at home all their lives - that ends up being the name they answer to and is their name. I think people only change it when their adults if they really really hate it. Most people just stick with what they've got

loveisagirlnameddaisy · 06/03/2012 16:45

Think the NN debate is interesting. My partner is christened James, but always called Jamie by friends and family from birth. However, in any professional setting he goes by James as he considers this more grown up. He likes both names, no-one can really remember why he was called Jamie, but it's not a problem and I think he feels he's got two names for different situations.

BTW, I do like Mimi!! :)

lurkinginthebackground · 06/03/2012 17:08

I like Scarlett best.

Northernlurker · 06/03/2012 17:13

I actually have a Miranda Rose and it's a great name. You don't need to shorten it. I occasionally call her MoMo when I'm being aggravating and we call her 'Mandaaaaaa' a bit because that's what dd3 made of her name when learning to talk. Her mates call her Mandy a little bit (she is well in to teenage years now) but basically Miranda is a strong name that stands by itself. It means 'worthy of admiration' btw - how cool is that? Grin

wafflingworrier · 06/03/2012 17:46

i think miranda is the best name, i also like scarlett.
don't really like dulcie-not sure how to pronounce it and it reminds me of that wilfred owen poem "dulce et decorum est".

CecilyP · 06/03/2012 18:20

I like Miranda Rose.
I would just go with Lucy, which is a name in its own right, if that is waht you want to call her.
Scarlett is OK but I wouldn't shorten it to Lettie.
Dulcie sounds very 1940s to me. Is it due for a revival? Not yet, I think.

culturevulture · 06/03/2012 18:22

Not keen on any except for Violet

I have a Lucinda nn Lucy. DH loved Lucinda and I liked Lucy, we introduced her as Lucy but Lucinda is always there on bc, so DH and I both feel like we've won :-)

welovesausagedogs · 06/03/2012 19:58

Love mimi in it's own right, and love scarlett, only ever met one scarlett who was in the year above my DS at nursery. And only ever met one mimi, at a casting for junior magazine, she was and adorable little girl with lovely blonde ringlets.

Northernlurker · 07/03/2012 08:08

Coconutty - I assume you mean Miranda Hart, actress and comedian? I think calling her an 'great big oaf' because she's tall is totally out of order.

jaffacakehips · 07/03/2012 08:53

What is your DD1 called?

Violet or Lucy, not keen on the rest. However I do love Mimi. I know a Mimi but she's Annemarie, her litter sister couldn't say her full name so Mimi stuck. She also use Mimi for work too.
