Is Zoe a cool/classy name. Or a bit 'hard'?

I like the name. And thought it quite classy. But have heard someone else say they think it sounds hard. And then I saw someone on telly the other day called Zoe who didn't quite fit the classy image I have. So its got me wondering. What does everyone else think?

I am liking Zoe Elizabeth.
My only other choice is Eilidh Isabel

I don't think it's classy or hard. It's just meh. I'd put it in the same category as Sarah, Amy, Louise etc.

Elizabeth is lovely though, timeless and classy.

Ruthchan · 17/02/2012 15:21

I like it, but I don't think it's classy.
It makes me think of Zoe Ball.

jaffacakehips · 17/02/2012 15:25

IMO, Elizabeth is classy, Zoe isn't. That's not to say, Zoe isn't a nice name. But to me it's a bit meh...

jaffacakehips · 17/02/2012 15:27

Disclaimer, I am sure there a lot of classy Zoe's out there. Grin

But if you want timeless and classy, i'd pick, Catherine, Philippa, Elizabeth something along those lines. If you want funky and cool, i'd go with Zoe.

Thanx for the honest answers!

Yeah, I'm sorry but I agree with the others. It's an okay name, but it's not what I'd call classy. The classy names are the classic ones, jaffa's examples fit that perfectly.

PopcornBiscuit · 17/02/2012 19:46

How about Zara?

HolyNoSheDittantBatman · 17/02/2012 19:56

Ooh I think Zara is much nicer

MamaLazarou · 17/02/2012 20:12

Makes me think of chimp-faced Zoe Ball, I am afraid. Zara is lovely.

PestoPenguin · 17/02/2012 20:13

I love Zoe and think it's much nicer than all the 'classics' suggested and not hard at all. Just goes to show it's all a mattter of different tastes Smile.

LaTristesse · 17/02/2012 20:20

I think Zoe is pretty, not necessarily classy but sweet and suitable for all ages (not too girly, trendy, chavvy etc). And I much prefer it to Eilidh for what it's worth!

mumtocuddlebundle · 18/02/2012 15:48

It's nice to get a few pro Zoe answers. I guess it just depends what your associations are with a name. I'm not so keen on Zara- it reminds me of Zara from Hollyoaks!

I like isobel and elizabeth.

marshmallowpies · 18/02/2012 15:51

I like it, it's Greek so it has classical origins, it's unusual as it starts with Z, and it sounds cool. But then I have a good friend called Zoe so I'm biased...

mamalovesmojitos · 18/02/2012 15:52

Love Zoe. Sounds pretty, young and a bit quirky to me.

mumtocuddlebundle · 18/02/2012 18:01

Marshmallowpies that's my thinking on Zoe. Cos of the Greek origins it's a bit classical. I love Elizabeth but dh doesn't as a first name. And we can't use isobel cos it's a name a family member has.

I like it. Easy for a child to spell. I think it is quite cool. Zooey Deschanel is considered quite cool and quirky as long as you ignore The New Girl and I guess she must really be Zoe. I'd be happy if it was my own name. And I think Zoe Ball is quite nice so that's not a bad association.

vitaminC · 18/02/2012 18:20

I don't know about "classy", if you mean "posh", but to me it's a classic name, i.e. it has never been part of a naming fad and peaked in popularity then waned. I know Zoes in pretty much every age bracket.

Also, it's easy to pronounce and spell in lots of languages, which makes it a good choice, IMO!

SecretNutellaFix · 18/02/2012 18:26

Zoe is a classic name, rather than classy. Certainly not tremendously popular at the moment.

SwedishEdith- Zooey Deschanel is Zooey after the character from the book, Franny and Zooey.

SwedishEdith · 18/02/2012 18:30

Ah, ok, didn't realise that.

zozzle · 19/02/2012 21:57

I like it - empresses and saints called Zoe date back thousands of years so if you know your history surely it has to be much more classic than most!

southeastastra · 19/02/2012 21:59

i don't think i've met one zoe, and i've worked with kids for 10 years or so

it's a kooky name

zozzle · 19/02/2012 22:01

Jaffa's "classy" names are IMO a bit boring (although I like Elizabeth for nn potential). Sorry.

BikeRunSki · 19/02/2012 22:05

VitC There was a massive Zoe fad in the mid 70s (certainly in S London). My sister was one of 9 in her year at school!

workshy · 19/02/2012 22:08

I love the name Zoe

means 'life' which is lovely and it is much less likely to cause raised eyebrows than some of the old lady names that seem so popular Hmm
