Unpleasant comments you have received when revealing baby name

My friend has just had a daughter (Monday morning, all new and pink and fresh and gorgeous). She has chosen Alice Elizabeth, (imo) a timeless classic name which wont age.

Her mother's comment:

''Oh. Playing it safe are you?'' Hmm
''Well I suppose someone has to use the boring names so the braver people can use the nicer ones...'' Shock

I mean as comments go, it's not the nastiest, but the timing (Alice was about four hours old and friend was in blissed out baby loveness) wasn't great.

Just wondered what, if any negative comments you had when announcing baby name...

how dreadfully rude, that is a lovely combination of names.
we dont all want mercedes.

GossipMonger · 17/02/2012 09:54

My Gran said to my Mum when my sister was born.........

'Amy? What sort of name is Amy? I had just got used to Abigail! and then you changed it!'

DialMforMummy · 17/02/2012 09:56

Well I think your name choice is lovely. Tell these people to f@&£? off, they are so rude!!
In our case, it was pretty clear that some people didn't like our choice of name but did dare say it so clearly, surely because they knew they would get their head bitten off! Grin

hillyhilly · 17/02/2012 09:58

"You can't call her that, it's a ridiculous name" - my MIL on being told that dd had a arrived but was in special care

letseatgrandma · 17/02/2012 10:03

I had 'what were you on when you thought of THAT one??!'

It's a perfectly normal (top 25 girls' names at the time)!!

jaffacakehips · 17/02/2012 10:03

Some people are extremely rude of her mother. FWIW i think Alice Elizabeth is a lovely name.

It does appear to me that, the people who we are closest too, are the ones whom make these extraordinary comments. My father make a few noises about DD's name before she was born, but no a sound once she arrived.

KnitterInTheNW · 17/02/2012 10:13

Lady at playgroup when told my DS2's name - Charlie- ' oh I don't like shortened names, have you not called him Charles? ' No actually, because we do like shortened names and it's none of your business anyway you old busybody... (not said out loud unfortunately! )

Alice Elizabeth is beautiful.

3boysgirlontheway · 17/02/2012 11:30

On being told that our very Irish baby boy was called Levi - "That's a very black name isn't it" Shock

pchick · 17/02/2012 11:36

What a rude person! Its not up to her what the baby is called. Please show your friend this thread to show her what support she has.

TheCrunchUnderfoot · 17/02/2012 15:05

Useful to have an early heads-up on which granny is going to be an awkward nasty cow, I suppose.

Congratulations to your friend!

MamaLazarou · 17/02/2012 15:12

All my mum could think of to say about her new grandson's name when I told her it was that it was 'better than Barry, I suppose'.

When my grandmother heard my sister had named her baby Heidi, she said it was 'too German' and told my sister she 'might as well just stick a cow bell round her neck'.

chipmonkey · 17/02/2012 15:55

"That's an old man's name" from my aunt about ds3's name ( Tom)
Well, all old men were little boys once.....

G0ldenbrown · 17/02/2012 16:02

Alice Elizabeth would be my very first choice of girls name, as Elizabeth is my middle name after my great grandmother, Elizabeth Alice!

Unfortunately, DH does not like Alice

Oh, and I probably need to conceive before i start planning names

HarryHoleCameToTea · 17/02/2012 16:06

MIL asked if she could use DS' middle name "because she liked that".....DH reacted perfectly and said she could if she wanted so long as he, I and DS never heard her and it's never been mentioned since!

Princessandapea · 17/02/2012 16:08

I love the name Clementine but when we told the MIL she said we may as well just call it Satsuma. Each time we mention the name she comes out with a similar comment and gives us the list of names she would choose instead.

Abcinthia · 17/02/2012 16:18

"Oh that is soooooo common and not original at all. Why choose that? Couldn't you think of anything better?" when I revealed DD's name Imogen to one of my relatives.

Waspie · 17/02/2012 16:23

None particularly about my son's name but plenty about my top girls name choice (had he been a girl) of Isolde. Mostly along the lines of it being cruel to stick a child with such a name. I wouldn't have cared though, feck 'em, I think it's beautiful.

My parents were told by my dad's mum that the name they gave me was a "Nazi name" and the name they gave my sister was a "maids name". She couldn't stand my mum, and the feeling was very mutual.

CharlieBoo · 17/02/2012 16:24

Yes my aunt made a nasty comment about dds name, but it's water off a ducks back to me... I don't particularly like the names she called her children, but that's the point, they're her children to name. It did miff my mum off tho, but then my aunts always been a wee bit spiteful. I think Alice Elizabeth is gorgeous.

Waspie · 17/02/2012 16:26

p.s. Alice Elizabeth is a lovely name.

Clawdy · 17/02/2012 16:26

My mum, gloomily, when hearing DD's name would be Elinor: "She'll spend her whole life having to spell it to everyone. Why didn't you stick with Katherine?" Of course, only one way to spell Katherine, isn't there? (!)

Fraktal · 17/02/2012 16:31

'Why couldn't you have chosen a nice English name?'

Er, because DS is not just English? And it's a perfectly acceptable name in England, if you'd heard it instead of reading it you wouldn't have noticed the continental spelling!

DharmaCeutical · 17/02/2012 16:38

"I bet they all had a right laugh at the register office after you'd been in with that one"

MIL.

PeahenTailFeathers · 17/02/2012 16:39

Alice Elizabeth is a lovely name.
I'm 27 weeks with a girl and I really like old Roman names such as Augusta, Olympia and Octavia. Was chatting with a horrible woman in work and she laughed and said I should start thinking of proper names.
Her daughter is called Meadow Penny Hmm.

BonzoDooDah · 17/02/2012 16:42

My dad laughed his head off at DS's name and said " I hope he's a good fighter!"

Thanks dad!

Fraktal · 17/02/2012 16:43

peahen that makes me think cowpat...
