Twins - Henry & Harriet?

Hello, I've been lurking and reading all of your brilliant posts for inspiration, thank you! Can I ask for some specific name help please?

I'm 33 weeks pregnant with twins, a boy and a girl. Very excited, but getting really anxious about names..

The only two names we both love are Henry and Harriet, but really think these are too similar to be used together. Particularly as I really like the nickname Harri for Harriet.

So.. Do you agree they sound too similar to be used together? Any other new suggestions for us?

My number one choice for boys name would be Milo but DH absolutely, completely and utterly hates it. (Can you tell, he's made his feelings very clear?!)

Other names we like (although none as much as the above..):

Amelia (not that concerned that this is so popular, like Millie as a nick name, but sadly, makes me think of Millie Dowler)
Flora (not too worried about the margarine connection, but don't love it as much as Harriet)
Poppy (like it lots, but a bit worried it's a bit 'flighty')
Lola (I originally loved this and DH hated it, now he's softened to it and I'm not so sure.)

William (feels a bit too sensible)
Archie (this is DH's absolutely favourite. I can't get over not having a full name on his birth certificate and can't quite bring myself to inflict Archibald on him.)
Monty (I love the feel of a WW2 fighter pilot. However, again, can't get over not having a full name on his birth certificate and can't quite bring myself to inflict Montgomery etc on him.)

So, any new suggestions gratefully received! Thank you.

My cousin has a boy and a girl called Henry and Harriet (not twins but they are very close in age) so it seems normal to me!

allyfe · 13/02/2012 13:02

I must admit, I think that they are quite similar. You will have Henry and Harry, and people might just assume they are two boys. Also, if you are anything like me, you'll end up calling them the wrong thing (I do that occasionally with mine with TOTALLY different names. However, none of those are really major problems, so if you love the names, then go for it. Some people love very similar names.

They are both lovely names. I love Harriet and know a very lovely 6 month old Henry who is gorgeous.

For your other names, I LOVE Montgomery (Monty for short). Archie is so incredibly popular, and Archibald I don't like. But Montgomery - I'd say go for it!!

For your girls names, Harriet is my favorite. Ameila I like but it feels very popular (I think because I also associate it with Amelie and so I know some of both). Flora and Poppy both feel a little bit flowery for me. And Lola I like, but not anywhere near as much as Harriet.

Henry and Flora is lovely.

Or how about Harriet and Montagu (Monty)?

I think Henry and Harriet are lovely! I would pick them. I understand your reasoning on all other names you mentioned.

allyfe · 13/02/2012 13:24

This is probably very unlikely, but I would worry about Flora in case your DS becomes Fauna as a nickname at school.

(Do remember I'm biased because it isn't my favorite name).

iseenodust · 13/02/2012 13:28

They do seem a bit similar & I think the same initial & DOB might lead to bureaucratic hiccups in life.

Flora is lovely and I also like Monty.

FizzyLambert · 13/02/2012 13:42

I love the names Henry and Harriet for Twins.

I prefer it when twins have similar sounding names.

jaffacakehips · 13/02/2012 13:42

Personally i think it's way too confusing! Both names are lovely, but for twins, no. I won't have Amelia or Archie either.

I think its nice for twins (my oldest siblings are twins) to have names that aren't similar. It's good for them to have there own identity. I'd also give the 2nd twin born a name starting with a higher letter up the alphabet so they are called first from time to time..

IMO Henry and Harriet are very strong names, whist Poppy and Lola seem a bit wishywashy. Any names which you love, but don't love the nn, i would bin. They will get shorted at some point. However saying that, your child will take on that name. So I'd try not to worry about any negative connotations.

Monty and Flora would be stunning and have Henry and Harriet as mn. Sorry I know that's not what you asked for Smile

Good Luck

You absolutely mustn't call them Henry and Flora (which is an utterly divine combination) because there is a very upmarket children's clothing stores in the US called Flora and Henri and you will look silly if you call your DC after an aspirational shop!

I would stick with Henry, which is a lovely name, and use another name for your DD. Amelia is lovely and of all your choices goes well with Henry.

Violet and Henry would be a terrific combination too!

JuluLu · 13/02/2012 13:56

They're basically the same name. It's very American to give twins matching names...

LouMacca · 13/02/2012 14:28

I think the names are lovely. My friend has twins called Harry & Holly and I think it sounds fine.

Positiveplus · 13/02/2012 14:34

I think they sound too similar and personally wouldnt go for siblings (never mind twins) with the same initial.

Dont mind Amelia or Lola and of your boys names, William (Will) is my fav.

They are lovely names, but I must admit it did make me think of the vacuum cleaners. The make called Henry have another in their range called Hattie, (which is short for Harriet).

But if you love them, then use them!
What about other H girls names. . .
Helena
Hermione
Heather
?

seren82 · 13/02/2012 15:37

I used to teach twins called Henry and Henrietta - definitely too similar! I would go for Monty and Harriet...

Montsti · 13/02/2012 15:55

I really think they are too similar...Am also not a fan of Harriet. Love Henry though...Actually like all your boys names but would have Montgomery nn. Monty...

I like Amelia but LOVE Emilia...nn. Emmy (or Milly so you can decide later). Also love Poppy. Not keen on your other girls name suggestions.

startail · 13/02/2012 16:18

I love Harriet and Archie works fine.
I never use my full name and DD has the short form as her middle name, so I can't see a problem with just Archie on his birth certificate. No one is ever going to use it in full I can't even spell it.Blush

ButHeNeverDid · 13/02/2012 16:23

I dont like twins having matching names.

Looks sweet when they are babies. But will look really weird when they are older.

LondonMumsie · 13/02/2012 16:25

No, sorry.

As Harry is nn for Henry. And Harri is nn for Harriet.

vitaminC · 13/02/2012 16:27

Harriet is a contraction of Henriette, which is (pretty obviously) the feminine form of Henry! It would be like calling your twins George and Georgina Hmm

That said, I do love the name Harriet, so from your suggestions I'd probably choose Harriet and find a different boy name. What about George? Harriet and George go well together :)

Montague is better than Montgomery (which reminds me of the Wombles!), but Monty makes me think of Monty Python! I do like Monty and Millie together, though and they wouldn't have the same initials on paperwork etc if Millie was short for Amelia...

MyNameIsNotSusan · 13/02/2012 16:53

Too similar. I would really want my twins to have names that give them their own clear identity.

Henry and Poppy is lovely.

Or William and Harriet.

I know a little Monty who is Simon on his birth cert.

TuesdayNightClub · 13/02/2012 18:56

I don't think you can do Henry and Harriet, I agree with pp they are diminutives of the same name.

I like all combinations of the other names, other than William and Harriet because of the Royal connection, and I'm sorry but I think Lola is AWFUL (I know I'm a bit of a lone wolf on that one) Montgomery is fine, but Archibald is not great.

IndigoBell · 13/02/2012 20:54

Yes, Harry is a nn for Henry.

GetDownNesbitt · 13/02/2012 22:11

Has to be Peter and Harriet.

As in the Wimseys.
