DS is now three weeks old and we're getting to the stage where finding a name is desperate! Before he was born it was pretty much decided that he would be either Seamus, Marcus or Fergus. However, he just doesn't 'feel' like any of those names. Ciaran and Alexander were also possibilities but just aren't him. So could you lovely MNers through some great names at us? We like older names and also Gaelic names - the help would be much apprieciated!
Almost forgot, middle name is needed too.

Tavish and Brodie are fab. May I also suggest Philip? Mine is 17 days old and is know by the very cute even if I do say so myself nn Pip! I also liked Stephen but it's DS1's middle name.

messymammy · 06/02/2012 20:30

Daragh
Senan
Cian
Cillian
Onan
Odan
Lots of great Irish/ Celtic boys names there. DD1 didn't have a name for three weeks, so I know what it's like to try out a new name every day or so
Good luck :)

ScoutJemAndBoo · 06/02/2012 20:30

Magnus
Patrick
Kiernan
Ciaran
Sean
Finbar
Laurie
Donal/Donald
Dara

Any combo of those for middle names too.

We have made a small breakthrough! DS's middle name is definitely going to be Ernest. Now all we need is a christian name to fit around it Confused

Oh I like Ernest! Now just be careful about the initials...a vowel as a middle name can throw up some unwanted acronyms if you're not careful Smile

That's a good point, libbyssister. DC's surname is McCartney even though my maiden name is cooler so I don't think there are too many unfortunate initials ending EM!
That brings me onto another problem. With the surname anything very gaelic sounds completly OTT. For example Tavish McCartney sounds like some massive red haired, bearded gladiator!

What about the names Taquin, zachariah (zach or riah, nn) or quailin.
I have friends with these names and they have always fasinated me :)

PopcornBiscuit · 06/02/2012 22:45

Ernest is a great name :)

ChocolatEtVin · 06/02/2012 22:52

How about Heath? I know it's not gaelic but there must be heaths in Scotland, right?

kumquatsarethelonelyfruit · 06/02/2012 22:54

I have a Magnus and a Conan.

Heswall · 06/02/2012 23:00

Another vote for Lachlan, I would have had a Lachlan and a Malachay if it wasn't for their father

BonzoDooDah · 06/02/2012 23:08

Gregor? Then He's be a GEM!

BonzoDooDah · 06/02/2012 23:08

*he'd (obviously) Blush

ChocolatEtVin · 06/02/2012 23:08

Just had another thought - Logan or Ronan?

lollystix · 06/02/2012 23:11

Tavish mctavish was the second drumbeat man in Scotland ...or possibly the first according to bagpuss but I still love it.

I've never met a Heath in all my years in Scotland although Leith is a Scottish name (but not such a desirable place!)

What about Carey pronounces (cair-ey)- Carey Ernest McCartney

lollystix · 06/02/2012 23:11

Predictor bloody .... Drumbeat means drunkest

PutThatCatOutNow · 06/02/2012 23:18

Seth Ernest McCartney would be fab! Eric, Flynn, Lana and Seth has a lovely ring to it.
Also you could have Drew Ernest McCartney, Niall Ernest McCartney, Cade Ernest McCartney, Philip Ernest McCartney (fab name!)

mycatsaysach · 06/02/2012 23:24

i know....................... cameron

ScoutJemAndBoo · 06/02/2012 23:31

carrick

Harris

Lewis

Various other islands. Though not Muck or Eigg Grin

OzzieLou · 07/02/2012 12:36

Love Ernest.

Love Gregor Ernest McCartney (GEM) - genius.

Don't know if anyone's suggested Malachy - Mal or Lachy for short?

Suggest you avoid the name Paul but I'm guessing you've already ruled it out Grin

DougalDaydream · 07/02/2012 13:02

I love Ernest. No good for a first name?

I really like Seth Ernest.
Or Ernest Seth.

I know a Carrick - lovely boy, so quite like that too.

Snapespeare · 07/02/2012 13:41

my DS1s middle name is Ernest, after my granpa. His first name is Murdo. His brother is Hamish Rowan. We have a 'McC' surname as well.

so you can't have any of those! Wink

lyonheart · 07/02/2012 18:44

Snapespeare, your DSs' names are fab! I think DH may have had a change of heart when it comes to Eoghan :o To me Eoghan Ernest McCartney sounds fab but not convinced that it's 'the one'. From these suggestions I really like Ronan, Seth, Malachy, Logan and Carey. Sadly Ernie isn't a possible first names as we already have an Eric and people will just think we are Morcombe and Wise fans. Ernie is also to me soley the fastest milkman in the west! Thank you so much for you help you lovely people!
