I have a half German relative called Anya, would have been Marc if a boy.
They wanted names that worked well in Germany and UK.

i know 2 German people who have great names, Stefan and Varina. they are both great people too!

strippybear · 06/02/2012 20:21

I have a German friend called Heike, (pronounced Hika in english). I have always like it. I think the mail version would be Heiko.

hulabula · 07/02/2012 08:47

telsa and strippybear, your suggestions would be like calling a baby in the UK Rosemary or Susan - a very 1970s name Smile. Especially Norbert, Manfred, Gerhard, Heike - they are VERY unfashionable at the moment.

telsa · 07/02/2012 09:34

I know - but as here, what comes around goes around!

Some names that work in both English and German, and also are pronounced very similarly:

Philip, Marcus, Lucas, Anton, Max, Ben, Frank, Tobias, Tristan, Martin

Tessa, Dora, Louisa, Anna, Natalie, Connie, Lilly, Stella, Helen, Fiona

There's also some names like Zoe, Grace and Alice that are pronounced the English way in Germany, well, usually, at least by younger people.

boyfallingoutofthesky · 07/02/2012 21:09

Ilse/Ilsa - would that be old lady chic in Germany?
