Is Isadora pretentious?

Hi

My DH and I have been encountering difficulties agreeing on ANY names. Yesterday he came home and announced that he had a new name that he liked: Isadora. I have a clear recollection of us having a conversation about Isadora no more than 2 months ago (and it is on my shortlist as a result), but it would seem this has drifted out of his head.

Happily I like it and I particularly like Isadora Beatrice. She would be known as Dora for short, to avoid the multitude of "Izzy"s.

My only concern is whether Isadora is pretentious. I really like Theadora but have agreed to reject it for this reason. I also quite like Dorothea (anyone seeing a theme here???)!

Thoughts?

Thanks xx

This is lovely. No more pretentious than Claudia (my DD), Isabella (there are billions), Theadora (I know two) etc.

seaoflove · 01/02/2015 09:36

If you worry too much about " oh the kids will associate it with this" or " the adults will associate it with that" you'll end up ruling most names out.

This is very true.

There's an Isadora at my daughter's preschool. It's a breath of fresh air compared with the three Isabel/las and the two Amelias and two Rubys (it's a small preschool too!).

I don't find it pretentious either, but maybe that makes me pretentious Wink

lightgreenglass · 01/02/2015 09:38

I like it and I wouldn't bat an eyelid at hearing it. Go for it!

Sophronia · 01/02/2015 10:46

It prefer it spelled Isidora, as it is the feminine form of Isidore.

Zsazsabinks · 01/02/2015 11:40

The way I see it, if a child is going to be teased or bullied about something, then they will be. Bullies would find something to pick on be it their name/school uniform/glasses/hair.....kids are mean and it's another issue entirely!

I'm not that keen on Isadora but if you love it. that's what counts, you can't please everyone with a name, let alone a stranger on the internet!

If Isadora is close but just not quite sitting right with you, you could always consider:
Imelda
Ishbel
Isolde (could probably still shorten to Dora?)

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 01/02/2015 12:01

I like it, although the immediate association is sad. But if you didn't use any names where there'd been a sad story associated, there wouldn't be many left!

Wizadora was on cITV in the early nineties and wasn't a toddlers show - I think it will mainly be people in their twenties/early thirties who remember it.

itssangriaoclock · 01/02/2015 12:34

I think it's cute and different.

shakemysilliesout · 01/02/2015 12:38

I wasn't allowed to watch itv....

I love it and love nn Dora. But I love dora the explorer.

IsadoraQuagmire · 01/02/2015 12:50

Isadora is an excellent name, though I think Isadora Duncan was rather pretentious!
Dora's a lovely name, can't stand Izzy.

mondaymadness · 01/02/2015 13:18

It's not pretentious and it's a change from the usual Isabell(a)s/Isobels. If you love the name, use it, and the nn is cute. People will get used to it and associate it with your daughter not some cartoon Wizardora(?). Never heard of it myself and I am surrounded by children!

ChestyTheSnowman · 01/02/2015 22:31

Love love love it

But

It does make me think of wizzadora (mid 30s)

GregorSamsa · 01/02/2015 22:33

I know a 10 year-old Isadora, I think it's lovely. Smile

mortil2 · 01/02/2015 22:36

I like isadora but Dora makes me think of 'dora the explora '

AuntieStella · 01/02/2015 22:40

OPs DD will be 3ish by now, so I don't think she'll be needing more suggestions!

(am I imagining it, or are there a lot of reanimated threads today?)

Penguinsaresmall · 01/02/2015 22:43

Nog pretentious, but does seem to me like a sad name as the only one I've heard of met a horrible end Sad

KatherinaMinola · 01/02/2015 22:45

Had to double-take at the date on this (also felt deja-vu...) ZOMBIE THREAD!

seaoflove · 01/02/2015 23:16

Ah bollocks, I hate getting caught out by a zombie thread.

reuset · 02/02/2015 12:23

I can't tell you that as I don't know you or anything about you. People can only answer if the name Isadora, or indeed any name, would be pretentious for them to use. It's very personal thing, for some people it wouldn't be at all pretentious or out of place.

As you're having doubts perhaps you've answered your own question. Choose a name you feel more comfortable with using instead

looki · 03/02/2015 14:24

I've never heard of Whizz(sp) and anyway seriously so what? Kids will find a nickname if they want to.

Personally I dislike Dora. I'd be more concerned with Zdora the Explorer but like a PP it's a drab dreary name to me.

I don't think Olivia was ever pretentious? Or Isabel etc? Though I agree Isadora is more so ..... I like it quite a lot but I'd choose Izzy over Dora any day if you really can't just call her the full name.

redredholly · 03/02/2015 14:34

Yes it is.

PuppyMonkey · 03/02/2015 14:46

I wonder if OP's three year old is getting on ok! Grin

TakeMeUpNorthMountain · 03/02/2015 15:11

I really like it! And Dora is a cute nickname.

Qwebec · 03/02/2015 16:13

Qwebec · 03/02/2015 16:13
