Is Isadora pretentious?

Hi

My DH and I have been encountering difficulties agreeing on ANY names. Yesterday he came home and announced that he had a new name that he liked: Isadora. I have a clear recollection of us having a conversation about Isadora no more than 2 months ago (and it is on my shortlist as a result), but it would seem this has drifted out of his head.

Happily I like it and I particularly like Isadora Beatrice. She would be known as Dora for short, to avoid the multitude of "Izzy"s.

My only concern is whether Isadora is pretentious. I really like Theadora but have agreed to reject it for this reason. I also quite like Dorothea (anyone seeing a theme here???)!

Thoughts?

Thanks xx

I like it. :)
But the first thing that popped in my head was Wizzadora, Wizzadora ..... can't remember the rest. Hmm

WinkyWinkola · 02/02/2012 19:44

Well Wizzadora isn't such a bad teasing name, is it? I've heard an awful lot worse.

You could call her nn Dolly instead.

Isadora is a beautiful name.

NigellasGuest · 02/02/2012 19:47

Love Isadora - and have never heard of Wizzadora; am guessing it's a CBeebies thing (my DC too old for that now so I'm not up on all the latest characters!!) in which case don't worry about that - no one will care in 10 years time Smile

TinkerMaloo · 02/02/2012 20:30

yes, and seemingly you know it.

WinkyWinkola · 02/02/2012 20:35

How is it pretentious?

funnypeculiar · 02/02/2012 20:47

Like it (I think of Isadora Duncan too) - but actually prefer both Theadora and Dorothea. I think you'd be very lucky if you avoid her being Izzy, tbh (I speak as someone who decided upon my son's nickname - he's 7 and already changed it....

BackToBligg · 02/02/2012 20:48

I have an Isabella named before it became uber popular. I love it and so does she. I love Beatrice too.

I like Isadora (as in Duncan?). Up to your personal taste I would say. I used to sing the wizadora song to her. I made up my own verses.Blush

suebfg · 02/02/2012 20:48

Yes, it sounds pretentious

ThePoorMansBeckySharp · 03/02/2012 03:31

VERY pretentious.

ninedragons · 03/02/2012 06:21

I liked it for DD1 until a scan showed she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck!

But assuming this is not an issue for you, I think it's a lovely name.

Kayzr · 03/02/2012 06:59

I love Isadora. I don't think she'll be called Wizzadora. I'm 25 and never ever heard of it so I doubt anyone will call her it.

whostolemyname · 06/02/2012 18:40

I think its pretty and not pretentious at all.

rachel234 · 07/02/2012 12:57

Isadora is lovely. 'Pretentious' is better than 'chavvy' imo (as you ask).

beatricequimby · 07/02/2012 21:00

It would be pretentious where I live, as would Dorothea, which I do prefer. How about Thea, that is simpler?

Tbh, I think Isadora is the sort of name that might be hard to carry off as a teenager unless you were lucky enough to be beautiful, graceful and confident.

craigslittleangel · 07/02/2012 21:28

I love both names. I always wanted Dorothea as a name but OH said no. Beatrice is my LO's middle name after my great, great grandmother (we had to go that far back to find a family name we both liked) and she has a lot of Bee outfits/swimming costumes because of it. (OK so I used it as an excuse to shop!)

I think its best to remember, that you and your LO may not always be in the same area or social circle. Chose something you like and go with that. Unforutnately the name we liked, also happened to be on the top 10 popular names list for that year, but it suited her. That was more important to us.

Scathac · 07/02/2012 21:51

Fabulous. a bit pretentious, but so what, it's still great!

MockCroc · 08/02/2012 09:06

Thanks everyone. It has been really useful to have such a good straw poll. the likes and loves seem to outnumber the "ughs" so we are still pretty keen on it, although I have decided to throw caution to the wind and embrace being a little bit pretentious and Theodora ("Thea") is back in the running! Thanks everyone Thanks

I love Isadora, Theodora, Dorothea - they are elegant, classic and beautiful. They also travel well into other languages (German, Spanish etc) and have lots of nicknames.

If some see them as pretentious, then I'm proud to say I have pretentious taste Smile.

rachel234 · 08/02/2012 09:27

And perhaps those who do find these names pretentious have very different tastes and prefer names that you don't like either.

BillyBollyBandy · 08/02/2012 09:32

Love all of them, was very tempted by Isadora with dd1 and my "friend" told me it sounded made up. Which doesn't even make sense. However was enough to wobble me.

It is a "big" name, as it Dorothea or Theodora but all have "normal" nicknames if your dd wanted something more low key when they got older.

OneHandFlapping · 08/02/2012 09:34

It's a lovely name. Wizadora isn't bad as a nickname either. Nor Izzy. Or Whizzy.

My name is impossible to shorten or form into a decent nickname. I really wished my friends could call me by some cute nickname when I was a teenager.

isidoracoric · 01/02/2015 07:45

My name is Isidora, and have encountered isidorka. Never Heard wizadora!

Sausages123 · 01/02/2015 07:49

I love it was my top name for my first born

Tranquilitybaby · 01/02/2015 09:16

Love Isadora but Dora makes me think of Dozy Dora.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 01/02/2015 09:22

Thea is beautiful (might have the male version sitting upstairs, might be biased) if you are worried about length/pretension just call her Thea rather than Theadora.
