Calder for a boy?

I've heard of a few boys being named this lately, and I quite like it!

One of the reasons is that I really like Cade as a nn, but don't like Cadence or Caden at all.

Thoughts?

I have decided on Amazon for a girl, with Amy as a nn, Donki.

I know about a billion little boys named Hudson, actually...

I think Calder means pebbly or stony in Old English; which is why it occurs in a lot of place names.
I quite like it, (though I like Hudson better).

PercyFilth · 31/01/2012 23:42

They'll say he's calder funny name :)

How about Niall? To go with Amazon, obviously. :o

sashh · 01/02/2012 07:57

No
It's a river or a place.

CheerfulYank · 01/02/2012 10:07

It isn't here, though :) But I can see how it'd be hard to think of it any other way if that's what it is for you.

Anyone else want to weigh in? I remain unconvinced that it's horrible. :o

I know someone called Baulder (rhymes with Calder). I've already said I like it

What about Alan?

Hullygully · 01/02/2012 21:45

I like Calder.

And not just cos you're my friend. Saw the name before the poster!

AfternoonNap · 01/02/2012 21:54

No,sorry, it's not for me - but I am horribly traditional and not very adventurous. Not sure I see it working with Sam (lovely name!).
Sam and Joe
Sam and Jacob (Jake)
Sam and Arthur
Sam and Isaac.

Funnily enough I don't actually hate Calder, I just don't get it.

MyLifeIsStillChaotic · 01/02/2012 21:58

I know a Cade and I really, really don't like the name.

I have never heard of Calder as a name. Don't like that either, sorry!

Hullygully · 01/02/2012 22:00

I don't like Cade tho. Can't he be Cal?

gaunyerseljeannie · 01/02/2012 22:02

I know a lotsof Calders as surnames and a few first names, its lovely it is Scots and its nothing to do with pollution up here... though Glaikit may disagree LOL..... are you mid, west or east or another Glaikit???

CheerfulYank · 01/02/2012 22:08

I love Cal too, Hully. Ideally for the as-yet-unconceived Cheerful sprog, if said sprog is male, I'll be able to find a longer more formal name, with a shorter nn. Nathan/Nate is first and foremost at this point. I love Jack, but for those of you who know my surname....well.

Afternoon I do like all those names but they don't work for one reason or another. Good ones though! :)

Our girl's name (Eleanora Jospehine) has been picked forever, so that's no worry.

Annnnnnd I officially have too much time on my hands. Blush

Josephine, rather.

GlaikitFizzog · 01/02/2012 22:11

I would be the wicked witch of the east Jeannie!! Although not native to the area!!

Cheerful I love Eleanora Josephine. Would you go for Ellie or Nora?? Or Ellie-Jo!

lisaro · 01/02/2012 22:16

Oh that's seriously awful, so is Cade. Stick with Nathan.

DownyEmerald · 01/02/2012 22:16

Calder Hall is what it makes me think of which is a nuclear power station?

.... Wikipedia says that CH was one of the world's first nuclear power station. Windscale and Sellafield seem to be close by. How about them for names?

CheerfulYank · 01/02/2012 22:23

Hmmm...Sellafield has a bit of ring to it. Wink

I'm a boring namer under most circumstances, Calder is definitely the most out-there name I like!

Definitely not Ellie Jo, Glaikit. The only double name I like is Annie Rose. Or Anna Grace. I know a lovely little girl called that. :) Eleanora is DH's grandmother and I sort of claimed it years ago, so consequently SIL named her DD Vanessa, instead of Ella as she wanted. Apparently she also wanted Samantha, but she told no one this, so I gave birth exactly a week before and obliviously named my son Samuel. So. I have to use Eleanora as a name or I will have snaked my SIL out of TWO names for no reason. Josephine is after my mom who is Jody. :) I might go with Ellie or Elle...or just Eleanor, I like that.

I used to know a Cade, but I think his name was actually Martin. I don't remember why he was called Cade, if indeed I ever knew. So it goes to show, doesn't have to be a connection between name and nn.

GlaikitFizzog · 01/02/2012 22:32

I would think that Cal was the more obvious nn for Calder than Cade.

Shame I imagine an Ellie Jo running through a meadow, in a gingham pinafore, plaited pigtails, a slight lisp when she speaks and freckles on her nose. But I watched too much Little House on the Prairie when I was younger!!

CheerfulYank · 01/02/2012 22:36

That's pretty much my life here in the Midwest Glaikit. :o

I do actually know an Elli Jo who is a wonderful kid, but I'm still not sold on the name.
