Eldest ds in tears about new dd's name....

I have just had a baby girl three weeks early. We didn't really choose any names before, just a short list. Ds (7) and dd (5) have been v excited about new baby. This afternoon they both came to see me in the hospital and were seriously lovely with her. Ds kissed her lots and lots. Dd just wanted to dress and undress her!

Dh took them home then came back to me and we decided on our name for new dd - (Elizabeth) Tess. When dh went home and told them her name my ds sobbed and sobbed and said he didn't like the name. Dh called me in hospital and I spoke to ds who cried again and said he didn't like name. I asked him what he did like. His answer was Felicity, Darrell or alicia (we've been reading mallory towers!), or Cecily. Now he was going to be Cecily if he was a girl. I love the name but a friend of ours has since called their child Cecily and I am just not sure about it any more. And part of me says 'tough, you are 6, you don't get to decide'. And I love the name Tess. Someone come and tell me what to do/say. I am exhausted, just given birth, am tired and emotional!

Tess is short for Teresa.

Anyway . . .

When DS2 was born (we already have DS1 and DD) we dithered for what seemed like ages on his name, although it must have been all of 2 days because he was born on the Wednesday and when DH picked up DD from school (presume on the Friday) and told her his name she burst into FLOODS of tears.

She was nearly 6 then, and is now 10 and I don't think she can even remember it. She loves his name, and him,

Bystanders, on the other hand, often say to me "I'll never forget when your DH said 'We're calling DS2 DS2name and DD went "Waaaaaaaaah!!!" '

Grin

(Tell him that he can choose the name for his own baby - if he's lucky Wink - and that's it.)

My Aunty did this with her brother they wanted to call him Mark and she stood at the bottom of the garden until they agreed to Christopher. The brother was grateful in years to come to his sister.

I find this thread funny as my son wanted to called dd Elizabeth. She has Elizabeth as her middle name.

HardCheese · 28/01/2012 22:18

Children should only be allowed to name goldfish, and pets that stay at home. Some friends of ours let their six-year-old name their new puppy, and now they have to cope with shouting 'Poohsticks!' in the park after a large labrador.

Anyway, OP, tell your son that Enid Blyton's Alicia was a nasty piece of work, Darrell had a violent streak and was always slapping people, and Felicity was a bit wet. Grin

It's completely your choice, although as one of her middle names is Alice anyway, would you consider tweaking it to Alicia?

Agree that a trip to Build a Bear for a teddy to name might be a nice idea.

Maryz - why does that not surprise me?? Grin

Tess isn't a nn from Elisabeth. How odd.

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 28/01/2012 22:28

Oh poor girl :(

BandOMothers · 28/01/2012 22:29

I really can't' see why people keep telling the poor OP that Tess isn't a nn for Elizabeth it is CLEARLY listed as one on the Wikipedia entry for Elizabeth.

here

fifteenpercentoff · 28/01/2012 22:30

Can't you say you really want your first granddaughter to be called Cecily? And you would like him to keep that name for her?

thisisyesterday · 28/01/2012 22:30

yes, and if it's on wikipedia it must be true

BandOMothers · 28/01/2012 22:31

OP...ignore your poor DS. He sounds like he's having a delayed rebelion. If you give in to this then the next thing he'll be telling you where she sleeps and what she's allowed to play with!

snice · 28/01/2012 22:31

that Wiki page is a bag of shite though isn't it?

pictish · 28/01/2012 22:32

I have never heard of Tess as a nn of Elisabeth.

Anyway, ultimately you get the choice, your 6 yr old does not.
Our ds1 didn't like our dd's name when she came along when he was 7.

Were we bothered? Were we fuck.

BandOMothers · 28/01/2012 22:32

thisisyesterday but I knew it was anyway! ELzabeth is THE name for a hundred nicknames. WHo gives a bugger anyway? If I wanted to call my DD "Nicola" but name her Clara for short then I can!

fifteenpercentoff · 28/01/2012 22:32

Or give him a puppy he can call Cecily...you'll soon wish you'd called Tess Cecily then.

thisisyesterday · 28/01/2012 22:32

well quite!

Louplet · 28/01/2012 22:32

DS1 wanted to call DD Flowersmell as he thought that was a pretty name for a girl!

BandOMothers · 28/01/2012 22:34

And I see that Tess Daly was christened Elizabeth.

BandOMothers · 28/01/2012 22:35

Louplet My DD liked "TraLaLa" for DD2....I didn't have the heart to tell her that TraLaLa is a prostitute in "Last Exit to Brooklyn"
