Madison for a boy

rrrayray · 28/01/2012 12:39

Madison was originally a boys name, but in recent years many girls have been called it to.

Just wondered if people thought it had become to feminine? If you saw Madison written down would you be expecting a boy or girl?

Opinions appreciated.

I'd expect a girl.

AngiBolen · 28/01/2012 12:44

How about Mason?

wellwisher · 28/01/2012 12:58

Definitely a girl's name these days...

lisaro · 28/01/2012 12:59

Awful on either sex.

HappyHippyChick · 28/01/2012 13:02

I'd expect a girl.

pilates · 28/01/2012 13:11

girl

kreecherlivesupstairs · 28/01/2012 13:16

Ghastly name which my DDs girl friend has. Really horrible.

MrsJohnDeere · 28/01/2012 13:34

I think boy because the only one I've ever met is a boy (of about 5 years old at a guess). A very disruptive child at one of dc1's sports clubs, which really puts me off the name.

CecilyP · 28/01/2012 13:34

It is now very popular for a girl (no 67 in 2010) so I don't think you can use it for a boy. I have known men called Tracey and Stacey but in both cases, they were born before those became popular girls' names.

RobinSparkles · 28/01/2012 13:37

I think it's better as a boys name. It means Son of Maud or something!

RobinSparkles · 28/01/2012 13:40

When I was in the Drs once, there was a baby waiting to go in. They called the baby Madison. I looked, expecting a boy and it was a girl.

Ephiny · 28/01/2012 13:46

Not a particularly feminine name, so there's no reason in theory it shouldn't be gender-neutral. But it's such a popular girls name now, especially in the US, I think it could cause some confusion if used for a boy. And while there's nothing actually wrong with being mistaken for a girl, it's probably not something most boys/young men would appreciate.

So, I wouldn't.

noddyholder · 28/01/2012 13:49

Agree with lisaro. Same with Mason just not very nice really. What about Max?

MoggieThatcher · 28/01/2012 13:53

I'd think boy, but I don't like surnames as first names.

Montsti · 28/01/2012 14:32

I have only heard of girls called Madison, however as somebody else mentioned it is quite a masculine sounding name a bit like Taylor, Harper etc...IMO...these type of names are not to my taste at all and I think, although Madison is a unisex name it is currently used more often for girls so I would think twice about naming a boy this name...

OneLieIn · 28/01/2012 15:27

It's a girl's name

I like it for a boy

rrrayray · 28/01/2012 18:14

Thanks for all your replies.

For those of you who have simply said "it's a girls name" you are infact wrong, its origins are a boys name - as it means SON of maud. Its become popular in the US as a girls name, and crossed the pond, but it's origins are very much male.

However, I think I'll be thinking long and hard about it, I wouldnt want to give my child a name which Could embarss them in later life.

Thanks for the suggestion of Mason, I'm not keen and a friend has a son of that name anyway!

Thanks again for your input.

I would think of it as a girls name even though I am aware that it is gender neutral if that makes sense. What about Madden?

I always thought it sounded boyish when people started calling their daughters Madison, but it has definitely become a girls' name in recent years.

It's hideous, anyway.

scottishmummy · 28/01/2012 19:10
