Madison for a boy

Madison was originally a boys name, but in recent years many girls have been called it to.

Just wondered if people thought it had become to feminine? If you saw Madison written down would you be expecting a boy or girl?

Opinions appreciated.

Awful for either sex unless in an American teen drama

I agree on the general awfulness, and that as it is widely used by girls it might be a hard name for a boy to carry. Having said that we know a male Mackenzie which I woudl place very much in the same category and I don't think it's been a particular problem for him.

Cameron has a similar sound/rhythm and is more of a boy's name (despite Cameron Diaz)

I agree with Ephiny. Historically a (rarely) used boys name and most definitely a popular girls name. So most people will think girl for sure. But where Ephiny said, "And while there's nothing actually wrong with being mistaken for a girl, it's probably not something most boys/young men would appreciate." I can agree to this. I am a male Chelsea who was named Chelsea just before the name became really popular for girls so I grew up with some comments etc. But it is fair to say that most people think it would be worse than it is. Did people assume I was a girl from my name at times, yes, but then when they met me the problem was sorted, so it wasn't such a big deal, except in some cases where attitudes, bigotry etc made it more of a problem than it had to be.

It wouldn't be my first choice for a boy but if I had a reason to use it I would not throw it out completely either.

I love the name but deff think of it as a girls names - plus think it would get shortened to maddi Which sounds really feminine to me. I think Mason is a similar more boyish version - it's not at all popular with mumsnetters but I love it Smile
