I suppose it is what I get for marrying a Medieval ( Anglo-Saxon) expert.

I think he is slightly crazy but he has made me promise to put up his list because 'you will be surprised' (this is the list after my cull btw)
So....

Boys

Athelstan
Oslac

Girls

Alswitha /Ealswith
Osburh/ Osburga

Tipple's DH - can I suggest you read this article - it's actually hard to have an unusual name. These are really unusual names, and that requires a 'big' personality to carry off, you don't know in advance that your DC will have big personailties. They might grow to hate all things Medieval because of the name, whereas if you give them a more 'vanilla' name, your passion might be something you share with them in the future.

NiceViper · 27/01/2012 20:39

BBB - Eustace or Percy would be better?

naturalbaby · 27/01/2012 20:41

There is a reason those names aren't really used these days. Nobody calls their dc's any of those names do they?!
If he really likes them, then you could find names that sound similar e.g Ealswith - Elsbeth, Athelstan - Stanley?

Tipple's DH please step away from the baby names. They are not good, sorry.

BillyBollyBandy · 27/01/2012 21:35

Ooooo Tristam - that's from Morte D'Arthur, if he is into Medieval literature. Of course that opens up a whole load of Lancelot's and Gawain's but...

fivegomadindorset · 27/01/2012 21:37

Please could we see the whole list, pretty please?

rocket74 · 27/01/2012 21:45

A really great old English name is Edgar. means owner of many spears and was the name of one of the first kings I think.

Our DS 30months is Edgar Alexander. People were dubious at first but it is a real grower now everyone likes it. Surely your DH will like it with its ancestry!!

no one EVER mentions it on MN so not remotely popular!!!

TippleMacFreddy · 27/01/2012 23:01

Wuffa!! That's amazing. :o

TippleMacFreddy · 27/01/2012 23:05

It is Athelstan DH really wants somewhere in name - his favourite king of all time. [shakes head in horror]

OP posts:
TidyDancer · 27/01/2012 23:06

Oh my.

Sorry, I actively loathe almost every name on that list!

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 27/01/2012 23:11

OMG.

Whatever you do, do not let him go and register the name!!

Wuffa - tell him he can have that. When you buy a labrador.

LOL at him thinking you would be surprised at our reaction. Idiot Grin

MamaMaiasaura · 27/01/2012 23:12

Why don't you agree to Stan then as a compromise? Athelstan will end up asshole fan.

GnomeDePlume · 27/01/2012 23:20

My DS is named after an obscure 7th century Northumbrian king/saint. (His name translates as God's Friend)

Most years DS's name isnt registered let alone not making the top 100.

My DS has never been teased about his name (he is 13 now). The thing is that it is a name. At an essential level it is recognised as such.

The girls names are harder, AngloSaxon girls names dont translate to the modern English ear so well. IMO rethink the girls names but the boys names are good.

MalibuStacy · 28/01/2012 00:16

Actually, I really like the idea. I mean, why not? It's great having an unusual name with something behind it. My name is very unusual (I have never met another one) and it is always a talking point. Rightly or wrongly, people assume that you are an interesting person and want to get to know you.

So, I would vote for Oslac for a boy. Not sure about the girls' names, can you ask your DH for some more suggestions?

GnomeDePlume · 28/01/2012 00:27

OP, my DH has wondered whether the female names are actually representative of the actual names which would have been used at the time. They have a heavy gutteral sound, were they corrupted by male scribes? A thought for your DH perhaps.

TopazMortmain · 28/01/2012 00:29

Am slightly in love with Bede... Grin seriously

BackforGood · 28/01/2012 00:34

What Hassled said in the first reply.
Also what Chippin said at 23:11:27 - THIS IS MOST IMPORTANT Grin

Makes some of the daft names people post on here look almost reasonable! Shock

seeker · 28/01/2012 00:36

Oh purrlleease!

NoMoreMarbles · 28/01/2012 00:39

Please...pleasepleaseplease...don't give your child such a piss poor bad bad nameGrin

There are plenty of Anglo-Saxon names that wouldn't saddle a child for life...choose one of those for the childs sakeSmile

seeker · 28/01/2012 00:39

If you want to show evyone how clever and individual you are, get a dog and call it Fido, spelled Phydough ( oh how we laughed) or a very very small cat called Quantum (oh how we laughed again). Then call your child something which will not make people point and laugh.

GnomeDePlume · 28/01/2012 00:40

Having chosen an 'old' name for DS I find the negative comments very odd. IME bullying comes from many sources (parents of other children often helpfully start off name based bullying).

CecilyP · 28/01/2012 00:40

I could cope with Bede. And Althelstan is familiar to me, as King Athelstan was the name of our local primary school. But the girls names are definite no-no. Especially Sexburh. What was he thinking? And I agree with chipping to save wuffa for if you buy a dog.

NoMoreMarbles · 28/01/2012 00:47

gnome the years of name based bullying I have had was mainly instigated by my peers (very old fashioned and unpopular) and I had a lot from the children but surprisingly I get a lot of compliments from the older generations...depends on the name I supposeSmile is your DS an old fashioned name or a classic name?
