I suppose it is what I get for marrying a Medieval ( Anglo-Saxon) expert.

I think he is slightly crazy but he has made me promise to put up his list because 'you will be surprised' (this is the list after my cull btw)
So....

Boys

Athelstan
Oslac

Girls

Alswitha /Ealswith
Osburh/ Osburga

Tipple's DH - your future child will hate you. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon - and for the rest of your life.

Don't do it. Please.

Grumpla · 26/01/2012 22:50

I'm afraid I need to see a pre-cull list. Grin

Haziedoll · 26/01/2012 22:51

How about Osyth? Pronounced to rhyme with Joesph.

Its actually a girls name but I prefer it for a boy. Dh thought I was nuts.

Collision · 26/01/2012 22:53

'This is your Captain Athelstan Oslac Maynard, speaking............'

'All rise for Judge Alswitha Osburga Foster................'

'This is Ealswith Norris, News at Ten, in the Gulf.'

Do these work for you?

Would you want to be named these names yourself?

I would hate to have any of these names.

Try again DH.

bouncysmiley · 26/01/2012 22:55

Sorry but no....

DharmaBumpkin · 26/01/2012 22:56

No. Just no.

I went to school with a boy who's middle name was Athel and he was called Asshole his entire school life.

Tipple 's DH, step away from your area of expertise... Slowly now... Hands in the air. Give in gracefully and you can help your future child avoid a lifetime of pain.

dontrememberme · 26/01/2012 22:58

poor poor child, thankfully he/she has a Mum in this century. Let you dh pick the nursery wallpaper, you choose the name :)

EdithWeston · 26/01/2012 23:05

I love AngloSaxon names!

Here is a good list - you might find you can agree on one of the more accessible ones? Maybe Aidan or Mathilda.

The one that leapt out at me a perfect for the DS of a MNetter was Wulfwine!

PoppadumPreach · 26/01/2012 23:08

i feel faint

CheerfulYank · 26/01/2012 23:10

Um...usually I like "different" names, but, erm...no. Just no. Sorry!

ThatVikRinA22 · 26/01/2012 23:10

well, he has kept to his word, for i would be very surprised,

but then i would tell him gently, that he is off his tree.

dontrememberme · 26/01/2012 23:11

Edith, i'm sure one of those names is a well known thrush cream.

joanofarchitrave · 26/01/2012 23:12

What's wrong with Edith? Anglo-Saxon AND cool.

I'm reading a book which includes info about the queens Plectrude and Chimnechild (real people). Come back at him with a few of those ('The Inheritance of Rome', Chris Wickham).

boohome · 26/01/2012 23:20

I agree with Grumpla about wanting to see the pre-cull list!

But there are some medieval / anglo-saxon names less unusual, such as

Alfred
Cuthbert
Godric
Harold
Oswald

Bertha
Hilda
Judith

PuggyMum · 26/01/2012 23:22

Tipple your DH earned good brownie points for first class train travel. But not enough for those names!!

WidowWadman · 26/01/2012 23:26

I like Ealswith

magicwoodyallenzombiejesus · 26/01/2012 23:44

Emma Inga or Mathilda (Tilly)

Tobias (Toby) Theodric (Theo) Edmund/Edward (Eddie) or the lovely Aidan as Edith above suggested....

Pre-cull list pre-cull list - pretty please Grin
Did it have Baldric on it? Was that DHs cunning plan?!

nooka · 27/01/2012 06:23

I think there are some fantastic Anglo-Saxon names, and then there are some you could actually give a child! Your dh's choices fall more in the first category Grin My ds has a fine Anglo-Saxon name and is proud of his namesake (as he should be).

RillaBlythe · 27/01/2012 09:53

I actually like Oslac.

ShowOfHands · 27/01/2012 09:58

I have a Mathilda so am not anti the trend in general.

Athelstan's alright I suppose.

TheCuntwormUnderfoot · 27/01/2012 10:32

'You will be surprised...'

Grin

You're not though, are you? Not surprised at all. Which is not surprising.

BAN him from all name discussions forthwith.

PopcornBiscuit · 27/01/2012 10:48

I don't like any of them, sorry.

Ecgwynn · 27/01/2012 17:08

My beautiful, angry, huge cat is called Aethelstan. When we tell people his name they say 'What? Appleton?' As if we named him after Natalie and Nicole of All Saints fame.

It's a lovely regal name but if you want old English names and an easy life I'd go for Edward!

PS If the baby is ginger call him Ethelred!

BillyBollyBandy · 27/01/2012 19:15

Tell him my vote would go to Havelock Wink

LiviaAugusta · 27/01/2012 19:58

Please can we see the whole list? Grin Does it contain:
Bede
Raedwald
Ulfkell

Aethelflaed
Aelfgifu?

Actually Edmund and Alfred aren't too bad... either that or take any name you like and add a few 'ae's!
