Ivy or Iris...?

Dd2 is due in 8 weeks and we still haven't decided what we are going with. Until a few weeks ago we were thinking about the name India, but I've gone off that one now.

DH likes Ivy, I'm not so sure now after Beyonce used it, still think its a really pretty name though. Iris was on my list for Dd1 two years ago and I still love it, although DH is not too keen. Opinions please mumsnetters!

By the way we do/have liked other names NOT begining with the letter I! Grin

I like Iris best

Firawla · 26/01/2012 10:11

iris much nicer imo, it has a softer sound than ivy

Snoozypants · 26/01/2012 10:36

So that's 2-0 to me then, thanks ladies!

Iris. Not least because Risso is a funky nn!

calypso2008 · 26/01/2012 11:00

Iris, although I do like both. Iris was my grandmothers name and I really wished I had used it for my DD's middle name - I think it is beautiful and rare.

jaffacakehips · 26/01/2012 12:54

Iris for me..lovely name.

Just out of interest why have you gone off India?

awomenscorned · 26/01/2012 12:55

Iris. Like India too.

ivykaty44 · 26/01/2012 12:56

I can't agree that Iris is better

For me i is Ivy and you can give a lovely long middle name if you wish Grin Or something short and sweet

mrsv2 · 26/01/2012 12:56

Iris was on our list for DD1.......not so keen on Ivy im afraid

yellowkiwi · 26/01/2012 12:57

Iris

SLVC · 26/01/2012 13:05

Both are lovely, but Iris is doubly lovely.

tummytickler · 26/01/2012 14:21

My 10 year old dd is Iris, so I obviously love that best! (I also used to have a cat called India so I quite like that too!)
However, I think if your dh really doesn't like it, then you can't use it. I would hate to have to give my dc a name I didn't like.
Ivy is also lovely - and I think it is only the mn of Beyonce's baby isn't it?
What is dd1 called?

pinkgirlythoughts · 26/01/2012 14:27

I love Ivy, especially because it was my great-grandma's name (Christmas day baby!), but crossed it off our list last year after I heard of three born in our reasonably small town within the space of a couple of months. A friend from another town recently had a little girl, and was torn between Betty and Ivy, so I think it's definitely getting very popular, and now that Beyonce's used it, will probably become even more so.

Snoozypants · 26/01/2012 16:51

Thank you all for your thoughts, great to hear other peoples opinions-certainly helps! In response- tummytickler dd1 is called Scarlett and we have a ds called Sebastian, so a name that fits with those two really.
jaffacakehips still like India, lovely name but I'm not sure if it was the MIL who put me off, saying it just reminded her of the country, the poverty and generally not very nice things...Hmm

I found out that India was also a character out of Gone With The Wind, and even though not many people would know that, as we've also got a Scarlett already it might seem like we are GWTW freaks!

Ooooh, I just don't know, we never had this problem with the first two, just can't make up our minds! I'd go with Ivy for DH if he just couldn't stick Iris...think I'd be a bit sad if I never got to use it though, especially as I'm pretty sure that this is our last baby. Dh has other ideas, but that is another story!!

Ivy, definitely! Ivy sounds livelier than Iris.

OriginalJamie · 26/01/2012 17:43

I also prefer Iris

TinkerMaloo · 26/01/2012 17:44

Iris :)

darleneconnor · 27/01/2012 05:58

Ivy

nooka · 27/01/2012 06:17

Iris for me. Ivy makes me think of poison Ivy, and I think it is very short compared to your other children's names. However as others have said you need to find a name you both love.

JumpingForJuly · 27/01/2012 11:08

Definitely Ivy, although could be slightly biased as that's my 4 month old dd's name! She's the only one in our area but maybe not for long as the older names get more popular and after Beyonce's recent arrival Confused

2012blues · 27/01/2012 11:10

Iris for me too. The flowers are beautiful and I think there are lots of Ivy's around at the moment. Will only get more 'me too' now Beyonce has nicked it.

And she will get called poison ivy by everyone at some point!

PopcornBiscuit · 27/01/2012 11:13

It's only on MN that I've ever heard the "poison ivy" comments about the name Ivy.

2012blues · 27/01/2012 11:16

That's because everyone thinks it but doesn't say it out loud Wink

PopcornBiscuit · 27/01/2012 11:39

Really? Didn't occur to me until I saw it on here.

telsa · 27/01/2012 12:03

Oh Ivy definitely - it is much perkier and less droopy/drippy. Or what about Indira (meaning beauty/splendour). Or India-Rose, which makes it less about the country as such.
If your others are Scarlett and Sebastian, what about another S - Sylvia or Sylvie picks up some of the sounds of Ivy. I think Stella would go nicely. Or that Scandinavian name (which happens to be Iris backwards): Siri.
