fantastic, why aren't there more of them?

PurpleWithaBlueBun · 18/01/2012 20:49

I really like it for the abbreviations :)

LikeAnAdventCandleButNotQuite · 18/01/2012 20:51

I love Maggie, but its my DMs name, so a no go for us. We went with just Meg...no longer name on the birth Cert. She gets peggie from a couple of family members though!

FetaCheeny · 18/01/2012 20:54

I like it, and Maggie is really cute. Don't really consider it "old lady" though, more middle aged. This is probably because my aunt is Margaret so I associate it with her age group. I see the full name Margaret as quite a big name for a little girl for some reason.

flamegirl77 · 18/01/2012 20:54

A relative was called this and got teased as she grew up in Scotland in the eighties when a certain other Margaret was not very popular. She may account for the lack of young Margarets!

JestersHat · 18/01/2012 20:56

Margaret is nice and Peggy is good too.

Maggie still says "Thatcher" to people my age!

It's my mum's name so while I love it, I can't see it on a baby unless I picture a bad perm and a big nose Confused

magbob · 18/01/2012 21:10

I have a Maggie! I absolutely love her name. I like the fact that it is so familiar to people, yet is still unusual because of her age. She went through a stage of asking to be called Margaret (she wanted to have the longest name in her class!) So now some children call her Maggie and others Margaret. I have to admit that looking at her at 1 -2 days old I regretted the choice as it seemed strange to call a baby Maggie/Margaret but now I know it suits her.

LaurieFairyCake · 18/01/2012 21:11

Not this year you can't, Thatcher may cark it soon and it will look like a tribute.

PurpleWithaBlueBun · 18/01/2012 21:19

Thats a point Laurie, definitely put me off! Although some might like that...

nagynolonger · 18/01/2012 21:35

The only little Margaret I know is known by the nn Meg which is lovely but some people then call her Megan.

I will always think of Mrs T when I here the name but younger people might not be put off by that!

Maggie is OK but Peggy just says old lady to me.

Clawdy · 18/01/2012 22:03

Margaret Thatcher has ruined the name for ever...Sad

LaFilleSurLePont · 18/01/2012 22:18

A very ugly name,as are most of the nicknames.

missmiss · 18/01/2012 22:27

I quite like it. Maggie and Peggy are nice nicknames.

Theas18 · 18/01/2012 22:50

Lovely name. Sweet nicknames many and various maggie peggy meg/meggie Molly Midge (love that one!) Daisy even .

I've know Margarets of all ages . My nan was a Margaret , my mum is a Margaret (aka "our Maggie" when she was small) and one of my DDs has it as a middle name.

joanofarchitrave · 18/01/2012 22:54

There's a Margaret in my family. I don't mind it, but am the wrong age to love it. I also much prefer Marguerite, though as always with French language names in English it can sound terrible depending on who's saying it. I would rather a million times either Juliet or Margot - of course the latter is v popular at the mo.

FetchezLaVache · 18/01/2012 22:57

Shudder- it's my middle name and I grew up in the 80s, so I can't possibly be objective!

lollystix · 18/01/2012 22:59

DN has it as a middle name -she's 14 and HATES it (has always hated it). I like maggie though.

catinboots · 19/01/2012 09:21

I always thought Maggie May or Maggie Simpson.

For some weird reason my brain has never made the Thatcher connection. It has now Sad

We are about to use it as a middle name we think, but largely as dh's granny is very poorly and may not see this one arrive tomorrow. We hadn't considered it before, but now we rather like it.

ViviPru · 19/01/2012 12:15

Nice. Nn Greta.

Was my Nanny's name (grandma not carer)

Awful. My mother's name.

miaowmix · 19/01/2012 12:18

I think it's hideous, sorry (partly Thatcher connotations, partly it's just plain ugly), as are the diminutives. But I love Margot, Marguerite, or Greta...
