What do you think of Amelie?

I am wondering if everyone will just laugh because they think I have taken it from the film, which I kinda have lol. I like it as a name. It doesn't sound a bit... pretentious? posh?

Also, any good middle names to go with. Our surname is Rutter. So Amelie _ Rutter. I have a daughter already, who is Faith Elizabeth. I do wonder if these names seem totally alien to each other.

My partner loves Amelie after I suggested it hehe... but I don't want to end up having everyone think we are nuts haha

It's very popular at the moment, I know two who will be in Ds's school when he starts in September.

I don't think it really goes with your surname,

notso · 18/01/2012 11:12

I really love Amelie, I think the film is old enough to not really be a problem. I think it sounds good with Faith and with your surname.
I fear everyone would just hear Emily and you and she would be for ever saying "No it's Amelie"

I have an Amalie nn Mali northern european version of Amelie same pronounciation virtually

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 18/01/2012 11:14

Amelie was trendy about five years ago, so could date very quickly. Definitely not posh!

Pinkjenny · 18/01/2012 11:17

I like it, but it is very popular. I know three. If that doesn't worry you, go for it.

suburbandream · 18/01/2012 11:19

I think it's been a bit over-done TBH, and there are loads of similar names like Milly, Emily, Amelia etc around too.

tanfastic · 18/01/2012 11:23

I know one Amelie who is five. It's very popular where I live. I'm not that keen, i find I just want to say Emily. Amelie just doesn't roll off my tongue very well.

katykuns · 18/01/2012 11:32

Thanks guys :)

I like the sound of it, but I think it might have a medical meaning, for something not very nice (apologies if I'm wrong). Agree that it is very popular at the moment, so weigh up whether that's important to you or not.

mimimomma · 18/01/2012 13:10

I have an Amelie, and don't know any others. You do have to make sure you carefully pronouce the A in the Amelie especially with older people as they automatically think you've said Emily as they've never heard of the name Amelie, but once people know her name it's not a problem. I've had lots and lots of compliments about her name, but has been very current so could date, like all non-classic/traditional names. Is definitely not a medical term!

cakeismysaviour · 18/01/2012 13:45

Tbh its one of those names that I just lump in with other similar and very popular girl's names ie Ellie/Evie/Eva/Ava/Amelia/Emily etc etc.

All imo 'very of the moment' so I expect them to date. However, lots of people must disagree with me otherwise they wouldn't be so hugely popular!

KateF · 18/01/2012 13:52

It's a pretty name but I think Emily or Amelia fits better both with you surname and your other dds name (Faith is lovely).

However, amelia (pronounced ay-melia) is a medical term meaning absence of a limb/limbs but so few people would know it's hardly worth worrying over.

MamaLazarou · 18/01/2012 15:21

Pretty much agree with cakeismysaviour. It's been done to death a bit, IMO. Also agree that it's too similar to Emily. Every time I've met an Amelie (there are loads of them round here), I've always mistaken them for an Emily.

Also... that film - UGH! Sticks in my head as one of the worst films ever,

PS - not posh at all. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Barbielovesken · 18/01/2012 15:35

Its lovely but its really, really been done to death.

You will also have to keep correcting people as they will call her Emily.

evamummy · 18/01/2012 15:41

Have to agree - fear it's starting to sound 'dated' and veering towards the opposite of posh.

katykuns · 18/01/2012 16:23

I had no idea people viewed it rather negatively lol. I really liked the film haha

I haven't come across any Amelie's or Emily's... I am kinda more inclined to edge towards Emily, as do agree it is less easy to pronounce Amelie. Not sure if popularity bothers me too much... unless there really were LOADS.

And thank you KateF, I love my daughter's name :) Faith doesn't appear to be common at all either lol. Although do get annoyed with people saying it like 'Fafe'... and not pronouncing it completely... but they are just common clearly :P

Agreed it's everywhere. Lovely name though.
And - ok so it's just me as I'm French - I always want to add in the missing accent.

ThePoorMansBeckySharp · 19/01/2012 00:48

I think its time has been and gone.

persephoneplum · 19/01/2012 01:19

Totally over it - I think it's only good for a French little girl. People will be forever calling her Emily.

justhayley · 19/01/2012 22:30

It's my ultimate fav girls name, I'm having a boy but when I get my baby girl shes 100% going to be one, I really like it with Rose as a middle name

housemum · 20/01/2012 14:14

I have a 4 year old Amélie Rose :)

It does mean a lot of copying and pasting from word as I don't know any other way of getting an accent on the first e.

She is called Emily quite a bit, the worst pronunciation was someone seeing her name written and calling her Amy-Lee! She has a French name and a French bob because we like France and it suits her. The only slight hesitation I had on the name, for no logical reason, was that Madeline McCann's sister is called Amelie.

JestersHat · 20/01/2012 14:47

I think it's a bit faddy, but I like Emily and Amelia.

kerala · 20/01/2012 19:12

There are lots. Lots and lots and lots. If you are not French think it sounds abit pretentious and is definitely faddy.

kerala · 20/01/2012 19:15

Love Faith Elisabeth though! Would go back to the drawing board if I were you.

Soosams · 21/01/2012 11:46

I love Amelie and if I have a dd this will definitely top of my list. I agree that Emily and Amelia are more classic, but there are more of them around... both are in the top 5 whereas Amelie is mid 50s.

housemum try pressing the altgr key & e together for the accent!!

I love Rose for the middle name.
