Tabitha or Ursula?

Just like my Kit or Reuben thread, I thought I'd throw my girl names out there!

Pick one:

Tabitha (possible nicknames of Tabi or Bee... or none)
or
Ursula (nn. Lulu or Ursh)*

*Please be a bit gentle with me about this name (hormal, just pregnant, sick and miserable lady here) - I'm aware of the sea witch, aware that some find it clunky, but I love it and my husband is 100% on board with it :)

Of the two, I prefer Ursula :)

ThePoorMansBeckySharp · 18/01/2012 02:49

I'd choose Tabitha - only because I can't imagine naming a baby Ursula. Ursula?

persephoneplum · 18/01/2012 03:30

Yes, Ursula - it's a powerful, totally legit name with a magnificent history :/

I love Tabitha...cousin Ursula but called Lulu and do like nn but not keen on Ursula. Bee is cute! Also know a 94 yr old Bee and that suits her too!

offtobedfordshire · 18/01/2012 04:54

You sound like you prefer Ursula

persephoneplum · 18/01/2012 05:03

No, I like the names equally! :)

You can't decree what other children will call her - I know an Ursula who is called Ursy and knew a Tabitha who was called Cat by her friends. Bee is lovely, though (but might become Buzz)

mathanxiety · 18/01/2012 05:49

Ursula.

SoFarWeAreEqual · 18/01/2012 08:48

I love Ursula - strong, unusual, pretty

Tabitha says cat to me I'm afraid

can ursula be pronounced two ways - with an 's' sounds and with a 'sh' sound? - or is this a daft question? I'd try to avoid names with pronounciation issues myself e.g. esme, helena, josie etc

JestersHat · 18/01/2012 09:28

Ursula

RillaBlythe · 18/01/2012 09:35

I don't think an Ursula would be picked on. There are children at NY DD's nursery with names I have never heard of before.

Tabitha is a cat.

smother · 18/01/2012 09:40

It's hard to control nicknames. I know a Tabitha and the nn's aren't as nice as the full name - she's known as Tabby or Tabs

Tmesis · 18/01/2012 09:40

I love Ursula (but DH didn't).

I think Tabitha may be getting quite popular (I know two under 2).

FjorGynAndHotWater · 18/01/2012 09:44

My Tabitha has many nicknames at home including Tabby and Betty but at school she is mainly called Tabitha (her choice) she is in Y1 btw. It's a brilliant name Smile

WinkyWinkola · 18/01/2012 09:44

Tabitha. Much prettier name. Call her Bee or Betty for nn.

WinkyWinkola · 18/01/2012 09:46

Tabitha. It's a prettier name. Bee or Betty as a nn is cute.

Carlitawantsababy · 18/01/2012 09:48

Ursula! Love it! The awesome sea witch character only adds to it for me! Smile

Snapespeare · 18/01/2012 10:09

We have a (16yo)Tabitha, her friends call her Tabby, her family nn is 'Bitsy'

If I were having her now, I'd also seriously consider Idris, Verity, Clementine or Matilda. Ursula is very pretty though (do realise this has been no help at all!)

TheSurgeonsMate · 18/01/2012 10:24

Ursula, please.

Snapespeare, do you mean Iris? Or is Idris a girl's name as well as a ginger beer?

WowOoo · 18/01/2012 10:28

Ursula is my strong fave from those two.

I know a man called Idris, I'm Welsh and thought it was a male name, but could be wrong.

Snapespeare · 18/01/2012 10:48

:) we're huge doctor who fans in our house and are claiming 'Idris' for girls! :)

it's a welsh name, traditionally for boys, meaning 'fiesty'.

marshmallowpies · 18/01/2012 10:57

I'd choose Ursula. Tabitha is a perfectly nice name, but it's a bit 'cosy' for me and Ursula is much more intriguing and unusual.
