They are all lovely with the exception, imo, of Bay.

I would have a hard time choosing between Beatrix and Clementine, and Hugo and Oscar.

Ophelia is nice but the 'feel ya' jokes would be annoying.

I love Hugo and Bay (although the latter always makes me think of Kirstie Allsop as she has a Bay she always makes things for on her programmes! Not sure if that is a good or less good thing...)

Oscar is lovely, but we had to drop it as we couldn't bear the idea of him being called 'Ozzie' or 'Oz'.

Ophelia has sad connotations for me due to the Shakespeare character who loses her mind. Beatrix and Clementine are also very nice - although I hugely prefer 'Bea' as a nickname than Clem/Clemmie (which reminds me of the song 'old Clem' they sing in the forge in Great Expectations (yeah I know many names have been killed off for me for their literary associations...).

DottieRose · 12/01/2012 16:52

Yep the 'feel ya' jokes were my fear also! Was also thinking of Avi pron au vi but afraid it may sound too biblical with Eli!

Clementine, my fear here is the nickname Clem or Clemmie which im not a fan of.

Also afraid that Oscar is getting way popular (not that it would stop me if I love a name, also in Ireland its not as popular)

Beatrix, I love nn Bee but not Trixie!

I love Kirstie and I have to admit that it where I heard of Bay for the first time (Kinda naively thought that I would be the only person!!)

I agree with the Oz/Ozzie thing, it would put me off slightly!

I was aware of the Shakespeare assosiation with Ophelia and have to say that it doesnt bother me too much! Though maybe a little Ophelia would find it annoying!

I know an Oscar and as far as I know he never gets called Ozzie or Oz.
Usually Osc if anything other than Oscar.

Girls wise, I like Beatrix the best from your list.

Cloudbase · 12/01/2012 17:03

My DD is called Ophelia-Rose and until I read this thread it had honestly never ever occurred to me that she might be called 'Feel Ya'!!! Blush

Mind you, I'm of the opinion that idiots who give people stupid nicknames will find a way to do it whatever name you give your kids...

Ophelia for me (obviously!) but I also like Bay

user59457812 · 12/01/2012 17:11

I think Kirstie's may have a full name of Bayard (which has some kind of association with Knights, if I remember correctly). I think I prefer just Bay to Bayard though.

DottieRose · 12/01/2012 17:12

I totally agree, I tink if you give a child a strong literary name you cant go too wrong!

Ophelia Rose is so beautiful!! What kind of comments do you get when she is introduced as Ophelia????

OP posts:
DottieRose · 12/01/2012 17:14

Yeah Bayard sounds a bit like beard...the other issue with Bay is that our surname begins with B, so with Bay being one syllable it might be too much! There is sooo much to take into account!

If you want to avoid Trixie, would you consider Beatrice instead of Beatrix?

How about
Ivo
Amos
Asa
Solomon
Samuel

mathanxiety · 12/01/2012 17:17

And Isaac

mathanxiety · 12/01/2012 17:18

If your surname begins with B then would Bea work? It's a bit like Bay after all.

DottieRose · 12/01/2012 17:21

Thanks mathanxiety, Samule will actually be the middle name if its a boy after my Dad! Isaac had been a big contender for a while however I felt it was getting very popular and heard it three times in one day!!! that was that im afraid.
I like Amos and Asa though!

I get the Bea thing however I would be hoping to stick with full name Beatrix and maybe Bea every so often!

(that should be Samuel not Samule sorry)

What about Aurelia or Octavia?

Reuben?

I really like Beatrix and Ophelia, Hugo and Oscar but not bothered by Clementine or Bay which are too 'foody' for me.

DottieRose · 12/01/2012 17:31

Aurelia would be a nice alternative to Ophelia, that is one to think about! Though is there a cosmetic surgery clinic called Aurelia! I live in Ireland and I tink there may be!

Cosima, Rupert and Casper were also options! Though im not 100% sure on the proper pron of Cosima!

Rupert is it too much?
Casper.....I know the cute little ghost!

I think it will more than likely be one of the first six I posted though!

OP posts:
PutThatCatOutNow · 12/01/2012 18:06

Well I would say that Cosima and Rupert are great names Wink and Rupert isn't too much! Oh and I think that Casper is a bit too ghostly to use!

LittlePandaBear · 12/01/2012 18:46

Could Eli and Bay sound a bit like Ebay together...?

I never used to overthink these things until I started reading the baby name forum!

DottieRose · 13/01/2012 21:59

LittlePandaBear, I think you could be right about the ebay thing and I would never have thought of that!!

OP posts:
jaffacakehips · 13/01/2012 22:19

For Cosima....

Phonetic Pronunciation: KAW-zih-mah
or
Coz z ma!

Hope that's right...?

jaffacakehips · 13/01/2012 22:21

Our friends have a Clementine they call her Cici..Hmm it's sweet but i'm guessing once she gets to school it will be Clemmy etc.

ValarMorghulis · 13/01/2012 22:23

I adore Ophelia but would be a nightmare with our surname so please use it on my behalf. Also really like Beatrix, not so sure about Clementine.

both HUgo and Oscar are lovely. Not sure about Bay though. seems like it is short for something but i don't know what

ValarMorghulis · 13/01/2012 22:24

though think i prefer Beatrice to beatrix

DottieRose · 13/01/2012 22:25

Ooohh I like Cici that is really cute....I suppose it is easy to pick the nn when they are small but its when they get into school the trouble starts! I would hate a little girl to be called Clemmy.
