Its so difficult as I keep going from one to another and can see the pros and cons but cant make the decision! When I had my little boy I had the name picked out from before I was even pregnant. I like the idea of leaving it until I see the baby but would be afraid of making a hormone enduced mistake Confused

I always try to think what would I like to be called and I would just llllooooovvveee to be called Ophelia! I have to say the whole Shakespeare drowning thing doesnt come to mind when I hear Ophelia. I just imagine a whimisical pretty artistic little creature......but thats just me and my romantic mind!!!!!

Well I have a 3 year old Beatrice Clementine so I am sure you can guess which of your names I like the most... BTW she is Bea about 75% of the time. She is Beatrice at pre-school, and when she is being naughty Hmm

I hate Bay-I always want to add tree onto it.
Clementine or Hugo

That is a lovely name (Beatrice Clementine)! What kind of reactions do you get to it???

Really don't like Bay - despite being a fully paid-up member of the Kirstie Allsop fan club in other respects, I think it's a v pretentious name. Know at least one other person who's called their son that, and he's a pretentious meeja type.

Ophelia is lovely but just too sad because of what happens to her in 'Hamlet'. The other names are all pretty good, probably like Beatrix best out of all of them.

crazycatlady · 13/01/2012 23:15

Thank you Dottie. People always say they love her name or comment that they think it is pretty. Her first name was getting more frequently used in the area we lived in when she was born, but less so where we live now. Still, I've had no funny reactions, always good.

crazycatlady...did you have the Beatrice/Beatrix debate? I come from quite a small town and there is a very posh very well known lady from the town called Beatrice which is why I was veering towards Beatrix!

Only in my head. DH wasn't so keen on Beatrix, so that was that. My personal view is that Beatrice is prettier and Beatrix is cooler. Depends on how it sounds with your last name too I think. Ours begins with a K so the 'X' would have been awkward.

Each name has its own associations for the unimaginative too, if that's a concern. Beatrice = Princess. Beatrix = Potter. I wasn't bothered by either of those though and actually no-one has ever asked me if I chose the name because Sarah Ferguson once named her child that!

Cloudbase · 21/01/2012 00:15

Never had any response to Ophelia except nice ones tbh. Although DD wishes she was called something else, Ariel, or Belle, or possibly Snow White...!

Aurelia is gorgeous, and I always used to like Otelie or Ottelie as well.

I surprise myself by really liking Bay, but for a girl. I picture a tall, willowy brunette.

Ophelia is nice, but when it comes to O names I prefer Odette; pronounced O-dette (as in 'ode'), not Od-dette by the way.
