Boys names in the same vein as Fred & Arthur?

fredandginger · 09/01/2012 13:45

These are my top two names at the moment but DH isn't mad keen on either

Can anyone suggest a few more names that I can put forward, based on my favourites?

I'd like to stay away from top ten names if possible - something strong but not too trendy/modern (i.e. not keen on Max/Finn/Noah, love Fred, Edward/Teddy, Arthur, Henry)

DH has a thing about soft names - I love Wilfred for example but he says it's too soft

16 week scan in a few days, so hoping to get the sex of the baby confirmed... Emmeline is name of choice for a girl

Thank you

I like the same kinds of names as you. The ones you mentioned were on our short list, along with

George
Nathaniel
Isaac
Jacob

And, to throw an odd one into the mix, but was also on the list...

Jago

grubbalo · 09/01/2012 13:51

And my DH said just the same about Wilfred - I loved it

missboots · 09/01/2012 13:54

I have similar tastes I think - my list included Fred/Freddie, Edward/Teddy, Arthur and Henry, but also Albert/Bertie (although some prefer Albie as a nn... less keen), Ned, George and Joseph/Joe.

KarenJones · 09/01/2012 13:54

I have a George and I love the name!
Wilfred is nice.
I also liked Charles/Charlie, Henry and James although they are probably more popular than you'd like.

TimeWasting · 09/01/2012 14:00

Dennis, Gerald, Ernest, Philip, Norman, Peter.

lyonheart · 09/01/2012 14:05

Our boys are Eric and Flynn and on our list this time are Marcus, Fergus and Seamus.

vitaminC · 09/01/2012 14:06

On reading the title, my first thought was Edward, but I see you already have that on your list :)

A few others I like are Felix, Leonard, Joseph, Harold/Harry, Albert, Louis, Aaron, Elliot, Nathan/Nathaniel, Adam, Reuben and Joel

greenday11 · 09/01/2012 14:09

What about Wilf - sounds stronger than Wilfred. I like Fred/Freddie and also Edward with Ned nn. Lawrence with Lawrie/Laurie as nn is currently top of my list although may not be 'strong' enough sounding for you...

LargeGlassofRed · 09/01/2012 14:09

I have a Stanley and an Oscar

fredandginger · 09/01/2012 14:25

George - is now added to the list, really like it, although don't like Georgie, Porgie pudding and pie...but who really uses that these days anyway right?
Nathaniel, Isaac, Jacob - not so keen on - Nathaniel I don't know why, and Isaac and Jacob have been used by close friends
Jago - not sure about that one....possibly not
Albert/Bertie - I like but DH already said no
Joseph - already one in our household
Charlie - is the dog's name
Henry - I do like it, but saw Horrid Henry for the first time this w/e - really put me off!
James - classic and lovely but want something a bit different
Dennis, Gerald, Ernest, Philip, Norman, Peter - 3 of these are in the family already and I don't want to name this baby after anyone in particular (middle names have taken care of that) and the rest are too old-manny for me (but thank you anyway)
Eric - like but DH said no already
Flynn - not for me
Marcus, Fergus and Seamus - surname starts with S, so not keen on names ending in 's'
Felix - I like it! Do ppl still think of the cat?
Leonard & Joseph - in the family
Harold/Harry - too popular
Louis, Aaron, Elliot, Nathan/Nathaniel, Adam, Reuben -just not for me
Joel - LOVE this, but we have a Joe in the house?
Lawrence with Lawrie/Laurie - I like Laurie, but don't think DH would be keen
Stanley & Oscar - both lovely, but again, not quite me

Thank you everyone for replies so far, I've certainly got a couple more ideas

List is now

Freddy/Fred
Edward
Arthur
George
Felix

I like Rupert for a middle name... with that in mind, which would get your vote?

Not all Henrys are horrid! I know a very very noce one indeed
have a nephew Felix...people do still call him catfood :(

grubbalo · 09/01/2012 14:37

(At risk of banging on, but I'm never going to get to use it now)....

Jago grew on me gradually. It is the Cornish derivation of James, which meant it ticked my "classic with a twist" box

You do realise you'll do all this, and then it'll definitely be a girl, don't you?! Wink

SoFarWeAreEqual · 09/01/2012 18:26

Out of the last five, I would go for George (gorgeous) or Arthur (Art).

I think Edward is dull, I like Fred but not Freddy, and though I do like Felix, I think it is a bit faddy, in the way Oscar/Noah are.

Do really like Henry too. And Laurie is gorgeous too.

monkeysmama · 09/01/2012 20:06

Some nice suggestions. Would only say that I noticed in your OP you wanted to steer away from top 10 names. We know 3 Georges born last year, 2 Freds & 2 Freddies and three of the LOs at my dd's nursery are called Henry. Friend has just had a Theodore nn Teddy.

mollymole · 09/01/2012 20:08

What about Percy (Or Percival)

vitaminC · 09/01/2012 20:13

fred I'm glad you like Felix! It was a long-time fave of mine, but never got to use it as xh hated it I only had girls.

I think it goes well with Rupert :)

fredandginger · 09/01/2012 21:52

Thanks monkeysmama, that's definitely something to think about...

I really like Francis too, but I have a feeling that DH will be quick to judge that one too - grrr

Francis Rupert?

OP posts:
grubbalo · 09/01/2012 22:13

Francis is lovely (but I'm afraid was on my DH's "wet" list - I hope you fare better)!

ViviPru · 09/01/2012 23:08

Ferdy?

mycatsaysach · 09/01/2012 23:12
