Aaron- how would YOU pronounce it?

DH and I both like the name Aaron pronounced AH-ron but hate it pronounced AIR-on. Those in the UK, how would you pronounce it?

I'm thinking Aaron James is quite nice.

DH and I have used the only other boy's name we could agree on (Daniel), suggestions for what might go with that, assuming this one's a boy!

I've only known one Aaron in my lifetime and he was Ah-ron. I really dislike the Air-ron pronunciation. Sounds a bit wanky to me. If it helps I've lived in London/South-East my entire life, and I suppose I have heard both versions, but much prefer the former.

VeryStressedMum · 07/01/2012 19:06

I loved the name Aaron for ds and I would have pronounced it Arr-un/Arran never would have pronounced it AIRon (I'm a Londoner never heard it pronounced like that), but live in NI where it is pronounced ARN so that was the end of that!

oikopolis · 07/01/2012 19:14

I pronounce it the Hebrew way (Ah-run, flat sort of A sound though) but I didn't grow up in the UK.

I know one UK Aaron, and he calls himself Air-un.

Ihavewelliesbutitssunny · 07/01/2012 21:35

I would pronounce it Ah-run. Although I think this is probably just because I have come into contact with more Ah-runs than Air-runs.

pranma · 07/01/2012 22:09

Air run surely-Arrun always sounds as if you don't know how to pronounce it and were really thinking of Arran.

newportstateofmind · 07/01/2012 22:14

Went to school with an AIR-on and always heard it pronounced that way but only ever seem to hear AH-ron these days.

Ripeberry · 07/01/2012 22:19

My brother is an Air-ron to me. Do you know there is a Facebook page just for people named Aaron? ;-)

I never knew this was such a controversial topic!

OP - I know another Aaron with a brother Daniel so I can confirm they go together! The third brother is Nathan, if that helps.

howlongwilltheynap · 08/01/2012 08:55

Air-run sounds so much nicer IMO

TimeWasting · 08/01/2012 15:05

Air - un

Usually hear Ah - run. But that's wrong. Grin

TimeWasting · 08/01/2012 15:05

If someone is Ah-run I would spell it Aran.

freerangeeggs · 08/01/2012 15:37

Ah-ron. Definitely. I know several and they all pronounce it this way. In fact I have only ever heard (read?) the air-on pronunciation online.

To all those who are saying that air-on is unequivocally correct, it's not actually pronounced that way in the original Hebrew anyway.

FootprintsInTheSnow · 08/01/2012 15:57

I used to think AIR-Ron - but I've met several who've all be AH-Ron - so I stand corrected!

Littlepurpleprincess · 09/01/2012 20:13

My brother is called Aaron.

We pronounce it Ah-run. In fact it does his head in when people call him Air-ron.

I have known quite a few and they were all pronounced Ah-run. Maybe it's a regional thing. We are in Devon.

The name is hebrew I think. I love it but couldn't name DS Aaron because it's a bit wierd having 2 in one family isn't it?

boyfallingoutofthesky · 09/01/2012 21:34

My ds is Aaron (pronounced Air-on) and I am very gratified that a large number of people on this thread seem to be aware this is the correct pronounciation - I went through quite a bit of angst about the name as we loved it with this pronounciation and cannot stand the Arran pronounciation (which should be spelled like that, as in the island). I also asked on here prior to him being born and opinion was fairly split. My partner did a lot of research into the name and pronounciation, including consulting various linguists the consensus of which was the name is pronounced Air-on. I also note that if ever anything by Aaron Copland (for whom he was partly named) is played on radio this is how it is pronounced.

Having said that I am aware that some people pronounce it differently and I make sure I correct absolutely everyone who ever gets it wrong, even if I will never see them again (in an attempt to convince the world of the pronounciation :) )

Each to their own, but I would advise anyone wanting to call their child Arran to spell it like that!

DesertOrchid · 09/01/2012 21:58

Air-run.

boyfallingoutofthesky I love your post and assume you are an Auden fan :-)

ReduceRecycleRegift · 09/01/2012 22:00

ah-run

air-run would be aeron

AmberLeaf · 09/01/2012 22:08

Ah run like darren would be said.

Ive known loads of Aarons since primary school and have only heard the Air run way of saying it recently [boy in DSs school says it that way]

Air run just sounds wrong and yes wanky too.

ReduceRecycleRegift · 09/01/2012 22:11

actually Air-run would be Erin to me, and that's more of a girls name isn't it?

If as many people as Aaron Blake say get it wrong, then wouldn'tya think that perhaps the popular pronounciation has changed making it no longer wrong? just a thought!

SoupDragon · 10/01/2012 07:13

Or that more people hear it with a different accent on American or Australian TV shows.

wigglesrock · 10/01/2012 10:53

I'm in NI and have always pronounced Aaran - Ah-ran. I went to school with loads and my dd goes to school with 3 (its very popular here Grin), they're all Ah-rans. Tbh I'd never heard it pronounced Air-on until a few years ago when watching football on the tv.

lottiegb · 10/01/2012 14:17

There are three options aren't there:
Air-ron
Ahh-run
a-run

I used to work with an Aaron who patiently (and not so) trained everyone to say a-run (like the island and jumper). I wondered why his parents hadn't called him Arun if that was what they wanted. (I think Arun is Indian but sounds the same as Arran).

Aaron is biblical and like A Copeland (composer) and Elvis's middle name, as such I'd think Air-on, can see a justification for Ahh-run though have never heard it and think Arun / Aron / Arran is a different name.
