Aaron- how would YOU pronounce it?

DH and I both like the name Aaron pronounced AH-ron but hate it pronounced AIR-on. Those in the UK, how would you pronounce it?

I'm thinking Aaron James is quite nice.

DH and I have used the only other boy's name we could agree on (Daniel), suggestions for what might go with that, assuming this one's a boy!

Air-ron

Arron is Ah-ron

startail · 07/01/2012 13:32

Like seeker Air - Ron, nice name.
Not to common or unusual either. A friends teenage son is called Aaron and I can't think of any others.

tigana · 07/01/2012 13:34

a-ron.
rhyme with baron and darren

To me air-ron is spelt 'Aeron', and is a female, celtic name.

Ihatepeas · 07/01/2012 14:14

Agree with others... Aaron is air-ron, Arron is ar-ron

Victorialucas · 07/01/2012 14:21

I know a boy called 'Arran', after the island. Much nicer and no pronunciation problems.

Victorialucas · 07/01/2012 14:22

And you avoid 'ron' as a nn

TeWihara · 07/01/2012 14:40

My first instinct is Ah-ron, although I've also known an Air-ron.

Solo · 07/01/2012 14:43

Air-ron definitely (I went to school with an Aaron) in England.
Ahron or Aron is spelled Arran.

HeyHoLetsGo · 07/01/2012 15:02

AIR-ron.

Definitely.

Much prefer Arran myself.

5inthebed · 07/01/2012 15:04

DS1 is Aaron, pronounced as Ah-ron. Not many people have pronounced it air-on.

Flimflammery · 07/01/2012 15:08

I know an American man called Aaron, pronounced Aron (not air-on).

mincepiefreak · 07/01/2012 15:17

Ah-run is how I've always pronounced it (and everyone around me- I'm from the East Midlands). When I was younger, I always got really annoyed when people pronounced it AIR-on Blush

lisianthus · 07/01/2012 15:22

Ah- run for me too. Never heard it pronounced air-on, even in church, except for US soaps. Like tigana, i'd assume an air-on was an Aeron.

seeker · 07/01/2012 15:49

Just because lots of people pronounce Aaron the same as Arran doesn't mean they are right. Lots of people pronounce Alicia Aleesha, but they're wrong too!

Slightlytinsellyexpat · 07/01/2012 16:09

Quite right, Seeker!

5inthebed · 07/01/2012 16:11

Very true Seeker. I know three ladies called Karen, all pronounced completely different.

Victorialucas · 07/01/2012 17:51

I'm perplexed at that one, Karen? Kay-ren? Ka-renne?

therumoursaretrue · 07/01/2012 18:04

I would always say ah-ron with that spelling and rarely have I heard the other prononciation used.

Also from a linguistic point of view (I have studied in this area) 'aa' is more in line with the 'ah' sound in ah-ron than the 'ai' sound in air-ron.

But tbh this is just one of those things that can happen with any name...accent and pronounciation varies from place to place and even family to family so if you like the name go for it and spell it whatever way you fancy as people will always have varying opinions!

I have been told for years by people that i pronounce my own name wrong despite it being one of the oldest recorded spellings for that pronounciation!

5inthebed · 07/01/2012 18:09

Well there is the usual Karen, then there is Care-an and then there is Car-un. All from the NE I add.

CointreauVersial · 07/01/2012 18:16

There are many, many names with alternative pronounciations. Anyone who knows the person in question will get it right.

Happenstance · 07/01/2012 18:23

It's Air-ron i would spell it Arron for Ah-ron, i like both but you may find if you spell it Aaron people may not pronounce it the way you like.

Happenstance · 07/01/2012 18:26

sorry i'm from north-west and went to school with 2 Air-rons posted to quick

I've taught plenty of Aarons, and never have I heard it pronounced any way but Air-run. And I would correct anyone who did otherwise. :o
People are often correcting me on the pronunciation of my own DS's name too. Hmm
