Discussing with DH how to pronounce this name. I always understood it to be pronounced 'Owen'. DH however thinks it's something different, but he's not sure what !!!
Can someone please help clarify this.

I know an Eoin, his family are from west Ireland (though not Donegal) and they pronounce it Owen.

Considering you can also spell it Owain (Welsh) it must be one of the names that has the most spellings for the same pronunciation!

I was also wondering about Eogan/Eoghan - is that pronounced Owen or Egan?

Gooseysgirl · 05/01/2012 20:32

Eoghan and Eoin are pronounced 'Owen' no matter what part of Ireland you're from (I'm Irish!)

sleeplessinderbyshire · 05/01/2012 20:33

Owain is not pronounced Owen it's "o-whine"

Honeydragon · 05/01/2012 20:33

the Eoin I know is Ian

DaydreamDolly · 05/01/2012 20:35

Owen.

ReduceRecycleRegift · 05/01/2012 20:36

owe-in

Eogan/Eoghan - is that pronounced Owen or Egan?
neither are pronounced Egan, Egan is Eeegan
Eogan like Owen or Owg-in, Eoghan = Owen. A 'h' after a consonant makes the constonant (g in this case) silent

Gooseysgirl · 05/01/2012 20:45

In the Irish language 'eo' sound is pronounced 'owe'... 'owe-in' (ie Owen) is most definitely the correct Irish pronunciation of this name. And yes, in Eoghan the 'gh' is silent.

CurrySpice · 05/01/2012 20:46

The Eoin I know pronounces his name Owen

lollystix · 05/01/2012 20:51

Northern Irish friend pronounces her Eoin 'owen'

guinealady · 05/01/2012 20:58

Sleepless - I know an Owain and his name is pronounced Owen - in fact people who want to wind him up call him O-wayne!

mejon · 05/01/2012 22:24

guinealady - I'd bet your bottom dollar his name is really pronounced as sleepless suggests but after years of having it mispronounced, he can't be arsed correcting people. DH is Brandon but his oldest friends call him Brendan and he has never corrected them!

GlaikitFizzog · 05/01/2012 22:25

Eoin is Ian to me. There was a footballer Eoin Jess played for Aberdeen when I was young! Luffed him Blush

LynetteScavo · 05/01/2012 22:27

Owen.

But some people with a different accent to me seem to say "urn" in a gruff way.

Honeydragon · 05/01/2012 22:43

Smile Glakkit it was the floppy and cheekbones

Honeydragon · 05/01/2012 22:43

floppy hair

Floggingmolly · 05/01/2012 22:48

It's Owen. Really.

hohohoshedittant · 06/01/2012 01:58

I know one and he is Owen. Irish heritage.

yellowraincoat · 06/01/2012 02:00

I remember good old Eoin Jess and his floppy hair.

Honeydragon · 06/01/2012 09:20

Oddly enough my Eoin has just phoned.

I asked him why he wasn't called Owen. He said in the special careful voice you use for blethering idiots" because I'm not Irish".

I therefore conclude the difference is dependent on nationality

3boysgirlontheway · 06/01/2012 09:20

Everyone with that spelling in Ireland would be called Owen, whether he liked it or not Smile

migratingsouth · 06/01/2012 09:23

Owen (Irish)

HardCheese · 06/01/2012 13:57

Eoghan and Eoin are both pronounced 'Owen' in Ireland - can't speak for the Welsh and Scots versions.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 06/01/2012 18:39

Owen
