Discussing with DH how to pronounce this name. I always understood it to be pronounced 'Owen'. DH however thinks it's something different, but he's not sure what !!!
Can someone please help clarify this.

Irish Eoin here. its pronounced Owen, same with Eoghan which is just an older version.

Owain is definitely oh-whine. Not Owen or O-wayne.

I know two; one is Welsh and pronounces it Yo-an, the other is from the northern isles of Scotland and pronounces it Iain.

Owain is similar to Owen but the ain part is pronounced like the ine in wine, nine and fine.

The part of Wales I'm from, some would say it as Owen (the en rhyming with pen and ten) but that would be because it is easier to say.

The name that gives a Yo-an sound is Ioan, welsh for John.
Not related to the OP, but there are several welsh forms of John.

Bowen is Son of Owen. Many Welsh surnames start with P or B.
Parry
Pugh
Price
Bevan
Beynon
etc.
